since we are essentially talking about a dream here I will say the A* 85mm 1.4 god how I want this lens. but going back to reality I would just take my A 50mm 1.7 most of my photos would be street photos of the local people anyway and my 50 couldn't be more perfect.

Of the lenses in my bag, the A 50mm f1.7 would go.

If I could spend money on any lens, the 31 Limited would be it. On a DSLR it offers the best FOV and image quality combination - Like a 50mm on an old film SLR.

I would have to flip a coin between my DA 12-24 and my DA* 16-50. It's a hard call. Where is this island, anyway?

It's anywhere you want it to be, unless you'd rather it's a mountain or whatever. This is just an exercise for me to see if there's any consensus at all on the "best" single lens so I have an idea of where to start with lens buying.

My first choice would be the DA*50-135. I find that I am the odd man out here as most people are chosing the wide-angles. The DA35LTD is a close second tho.

Though DA35 LTD Macro is only here in less than 2 months, I have not seen it off my K200D most of the time.

And everytime I move out for a odd shootout, I had it on my k200d and all the other lenses in the bag are D FA 100mm f2.8 Macro, DA 70mm, DA*16-50 got "wasted".

It's starting to become my default and it's likely to remain, even replacing my "KIT" lens - DA 18-250mm.

I used to also have DA 21mm, DA 40mm and I've sold them off to get hold of the DA 35mm. And if you ask me again if I ever regretted selling these limiteds, I will say no as DA 35mm already the answer!

Hi Leo, OK, I understand now. Minimal lens swaps. I'd prolly go with a two lens system. I personally think the IQ of the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 beats that of the Sigma 17-70, but I don't own the latter lens, and what I've seen of it is pretty good, besides you get a much wider lower end. So either the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 or the Sigma 17-70. I'd then go for the DA 50-200 or the Pentax A 70-210. Personally think the "A" lens is a much better performer than the DA, but the DA does have AF, and is much smaller, don't know if lens size would be a major consideration, however either one would be a good companion lens to either the Sigma or the Tamron zoom.

NaCl(of course you could get two bodies and have a lens on each, the DS have gotten pretty inexpensive)H2O
Also now that I understand the question (I ignored it at first as these 1 lens, desert island, threads show up about once a month)
I'm with Salty on the first (wider lens choices). I think I'd make a slight change to the longer one though. Try and find a good used F SMC 70-210 f4-5.6. A little slower at the long end but a great sharp lens that is reasonably compact and has AF.

If budget wasn't a concern then I'd get the new Sigma 70-200 f2.8 or Tamron version.

Of course the twin DA*'s would be prefect for all climate and dust situations with a great range for a 2 lens kit.

OK, you've won a 10 day dream vacation and one of the weird and wacky rules for getting the free vacation is you may only take one camera body/lens. Obviously you'll take your Pentax body but what is the one lens you'll take for it? The trip will include tons of landscape opportunities, lots of portrait opportunities, all sorts of candid opportunities at all sorts of distances, pretty much anything you can think of so what one lens will it be?
Assuming you have a good copy, the DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

1 lens: tamron 18-250+flash hands down. I dont know exactly where are you going but there are things that you cant shoot just with a wide angle.

2 lenses: sigma 10-20 and a fast 70-200 f2.8 with reasonably close focusing. If swapping lenses are the problem get a cheap DS or K100d and wear 2 cameras instead of one.

This is just an opinion

Are they paying it all ?

I just have to assume that they're paying it all :-)

In that case I'd take the latest Summilux aspherical super duper lens in either 35mm or 50mm. If that's not in PK or they don't pay to convert it, well then gimme that Zeiss Macro Planar 2/50 or the older 2.8/60(converted), whichever is better.

If they are stingy well then I'd take the Asahi SMC Tak 1.4/50 which I already got. Better take fewer pics but with that magic something :-)

Georg (paying member of Takumar church, but also convert to the Planar and Summicron congregation :-)
