F vs FA primes?

What are the difference between the F and FA primes? Namely the 50 f/1.7 and 50 f/1.4. I'm looking to upgrade my A50 f/1.4 to an auto focus but not sure what the real differences are between the F and FA variants.

Thanks,
Chris

Not much of a difference other than cosmetics.

While FA lenses are identical in operation to F lenses, they feature improved electronics that support the MTF program line.

As for the lens series itself, there isn't much of the difference. The F and FA 50mm F1.4's are optically identical to each other, as are the 1.7's. The FA lenses do transmit a bit more lens data to the camera, enabling the "MTF" program line.

One other difference is that FA f/1.4s are easy to find but F f/1.4s very hard to find. And the reverse for f/1.7, the F series is quite commonly available but FA series are a bit rare. So if you are looking for f/1.4 then go FA. If f/1.7 is good then get a F series. Best value of the lot is F 50mm f/1.7, many on auction sites all the time.

I have F f/1.4 and F f/1.7 and honestly cannot see any difference in general use.
