For not much more than the amount being discussed you can get a new (but of course old-style) 70-200 Tamron and a 3rd party 1.4/1.5x TC. Admittedly the Tamron has issues with its physical construction, and isn't that light. But it would have advantages over a fixed 300, too. don't have personal experience with the quality but recall reading reports of excellent results, even with a TC. You might need to experiment a little to find a good lens/TC combination.

But the lens-weight-challenged here will be pushed far over the limit with the considerableness of that combo

Too bad you wouldn't settle for a manual lens. I have this same exact model and it is awesome sharp. Flea Bay $300 Tokina at x Manual Focus 100mm 300mm F 4 Zoom with Lens Hood for Pentax K Mount | eBay

Here's a boring picture at 300mm..

Check out the long center lens in this picture. That's the Tokina AT-X F4 100-300mm

SOLD!!

Ok, which one of you lucky guys purchased the Tokina AT-X F4 100-300 on fleabay? I see the lens dropped down to $250. Very good price. My only advice is practice with the manual focus. This lens is very sharp but only when you nail the focus.

How about $839 for Pentax-FA 300mm F4.5 with warranty?

Here
Very cool suggestion but I am afraid not for me cause I would have to pay duty and taxes and the price could increase significantly

.
Thanks for Your answers. About Tamron i thought but fa 300 + tc will be better solution.
I only worry about this point where coating has changed the colour in the lens I have found.

Yes, not really a fair fight.

Couple more beers and I may push the button. I've had it in my cart already once today
You know I'm having second thoughts purchasing just a 300mm lens like the F * 300. I really like the ability to zoom between 100 & 300mm. And it's your lens that I purchased I really like this lens. It's as sharp as my primes. Unbelievable. Are you having buyers remorse yet?

No doubt that F4 is the best glass you can get in that price range. A lot of fun to shoot it's just such a beast. Yes, a prime is restrictive and certainly forces you to shoot and compose differently vs. a zoom. I would answer yes, I will own an F4 again. Sometimes you have to buy a lens several times to realize what you had.

I have several 300mm. There is no best 300mm lens, but I prefer A*/M*300. They are manual.
For AF lenses, I am still missing the DA300. I have several Sigma zooms at this range: 120-400: 2 copies, non-os is sharper, 135-400: older, but sharp and good. and DA55-300 which is about average. Sharpness is not only property that I keep a lens.

smc tak 300/4 is also a good lens. It has some PF/CA and can be removed in post most of the cases. It also fits Canon 5d/5dm2 FF.
My best 300mm manual focus is the tamron ad2 sp 300/2.8, model 360B. It's not perfect, but for my use, It fits Nikon, Canon, Pentax.

I think it's best to keep the DA55-300 since it is light, small, sharp, AF, and not worth as much money as other 300mm lenses (~250usd).

IMHO it is a light lens for its focal length and very hand-holdable one at that too
+1, I'm with you on this, mine has always delivered when used.

It's the same weight and feel as my SMC Pentax-A* 200mm F2.8 ED except 100mm longer.
