Should I return this A series lens?

I just bought a SMC A 35mm f2.8 from a reputable on line camera dealer. It arrived yesterday, and it's in very, very good shape cosmetically and optically. Visually, it's darn near perfect right down to mint Pentax caps. However, I've noted that there is a bit of play in the focus ring ... if you tug the focus outward and away from the body it shifts forward about a millimeter... the entire ring and front optical assembly goes with it. If you're looking through the viewfinder you can see the image jump slightly as the assembly shifts outward.

I shot about 100 photos with it this afternoon, and the images are what I expect from a SMC A Pentax. However, I DID pay top money for this particular lens, and I wasn't expecting this kind of focus ring slop from a "9+" graded sample. I don't have a clue if this wiggle will get worse with time. This is a worry as I plan to use the lens quite a bit.

My M series glass and my Taks don't show this issue. Is this level of play to be expected in Pentax A lenses? Should I send it back and find a sample that's free of play?

I've never seen a lens ring move as you describe except many years ago when I dropped an old off-brand preset lens. I considered it broken.
You say you see the image move when you move the ring? Something's too loose or broken inside. Does the focus change when you move it? I imagine it must. The only real way to know what's going on inside is to disassemble it and look. You say you paid top dollar. I would be disappointed in it for top dollar. My logic and thoughts say, return it or get the dealer to repair it (if there are no other sources of 9+ or EX- versions available).
Only you can decide,

It is odd that it looks so good on the outside (from your description), or else I would have thought some violence was needed to do this to a lens. I have three A lenses and non of them have such a play in the focus ring as you describe. If anything, the apartere ring may be a bit weaker than the older pentax lenses, but the rest should be as good. Send it back. There are more lenses out there.

Thanks, calicojack and Douglas_of_Sweden!

I appreciate your input, I will take your advice and send the lens back. Yes, it's odd that such a nice looking lens has this strange play in it. I will send it back to the store and keep looking.

thats too bad because the 35 2.8 is a great lens. how much did you pay for it?

Is this level of play to be expected in Pentax A lenses?
absolutely not. my A series lenses are nice and tight yet very well dampened, smooth as butter. just as good as any M, K lenses in fact I would more closely compare all my A primes with Takumars in this respect.
