Pentax stopped making 55mm lenses before the A lens series came out. The only A lenses are:
A50 f/2 - Not bad, but nothing to write home about.
A50 f/1.7 - Pretty good IMO.
A50 f/1.4 - Really good IMO.
A50 f/1.2 - Superb.

Of course, they align in order from cheap ($20-40) to expensive (> $350) and honestly at this point of insane used lens prices your best bet is to either find one locally, find an underpriced eBay BIN, or just go for a new FA 50/1.4. You might actually pay *more* for the A50/1.4 than you would the FA version. Go figure.

Visit your local camera stores too! I've stumbled across one nice lens so far and I paid $100 for it locally. Someone else is selling the same lens on eBay right now and with 3 days left it is already at $300+. So visit your local places and keep a sharp eye out as some places aren't as insane as eBay!

I have the A f/1.7, works fine on my *ist DS (using manual focus of course)

The blur is very nice!

I've since purchased the FA f/1.4, so I don't use the A much anymore (the MF feel is nice, but I'm not very good at it). The FA is probably my favorite lens, althought I've been using my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 quite a bit as it is a little more versatile, but not as fast.

They're not very good lenses. They're also not even remotely fast.

Place a WTB in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum here for either an f/1.7 or f/1.4 lens. See what you get - I've both bought and sold for less than eBay prices to fellow forum members.
