I gotta have one of these...

Amazon.com: Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 APO EX DG Ultra-Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLR Cameras: Camera & Photo

LOL, read the reviews if you have time, they're a hoot!

Yeah, but you need to ask for a pickup to carry it around!

There's a photo doing the rounds of a guy shooting this thing hand held. It's hilarious.

[edit] I just read some of the "reviews". LOL.

Warning: Do not use this lens in any military area or close to a military/police area! They'll shoot first then ask questions later. The Sigma 200-500 looks like a rocket launcher.

You might also need one of these...

One of the sample photos was the flag on the moon which says "Made in China" on it.

Specs aren't that great anyway... it's down to F/5.6 at 1000mm

How you gonna use the F 1.7 TC with a 5.6 lens? ... outrageous....

What does 1700mm equal in FF equivalence? It would be great for small birds, if you could actually find them.

Or get an adapter to use on the Q and no need to send rovers out to Mars any more

We're Doomed!

But they don't offer it in K-Mount!
Pentax is doomed!!
How could Ricoh offer any new lenses without this? What are those designers doing anyway? I heard Hoya had a similar design (but, it was f/2.0 constant) and Ricoh ditched it and fired the design team! I read it on DPR, but then the post was deleted, don't know why.
Why so much secrecy about a simple lens, unless there's a conspiracy to keep Pentax waiting? Oh, sure, not enough interest, we have the sales figures to prove it, yada, yada. Right! It's all about the advertising income and we know it.
How come you never see these at the Olympics, eh? No Pentax cameras, either. Sound like a coincidence to you?
Just sayin'...

After your concise analysis Ron, I think there's fodder there for at least another 5 pages of speculation. But you should have mentioned Full Frames, the DA 70, cheese beer and bacon, more control of DoF, and hand held vs. tripod mounted. You're getting soft in your old age.

Lens can be solar-powered by reverse-mounting old Nikkor or Canon f/1.2 lenses to gather the suns rays with the optional Sigma "feel the burn" solar adapter, not included.

I think $26k is the MSRP. Haggle with B&H and maybe you can get the price worked down to a mere $20k
