Which lens shall I choose?

Hello everyone,

I bought a pentax K20D a few weeks ago, with a 75-300 mm lens, however, it's not like I imagined it would be, since I didn't know much about lenses back then, however, now I know that a 75-300 mm lens is way too different from a 18-55 mm one.

So as a beginner, would the 18-55mm be better for me?

The one I have now takes pictures too closely, yes it's good to shoot far subjects, but I don't find it very useful for me, especially for shooting landscapes.
So the question is: shall I just change the 75-300mm with a 18-55mm or keep them both? Can the 18-55 mm lens do the task alone? I mean good photos?

Thank you very much.

Ibtissam.

You should probably have both lenses: the 18-55mm for landscapes and close-ups, and the 75-300mm for stuff that's far away. You might also want to consider something like the 18-135mm if you want a lens that does more in a single package.

Thank you

Thank you very much Adam for your reply, but I think I'll go for the 18-55mm since having them both now will be a bit expensive for me and the 18-55mm can cover 85% of my needs -I suppose-

Thank you once again, I appreciate.

You'll want at least 2 lenses if you don't get the 18-135 (or possibly a 18-270) like Adam suggested.

The DA18-55 can be had for a very low price. Likewise, you might find you like the DA55-300 better than your 75-300. The DA55-300 should have better Image Quality, but it still has a reasonable price.

But just get a DA18-55, a DA16-45 (which has good Image Quality for the money), or DA18-135 at first, and start to see what focal lengths you like to use.

I think If You already get K20D with wheather protection, you can go for 18-55 WR and 55-300 WR, and You will get nice kit full weather protected... And the prices here on the forum or even new one from BaH or Adorama is not so high Light Rain, Dust, Fog, Sand, Snow, And You can shoot under these conditions very well

Thank you vjacesslav but I live in Morocco so prices here are a bit high for a student like me moreover, pentax is not very known here also, so.. But I'll try to get a 18-135 as suggested by Adam and DSims, if not I'll start with a 18-55mm

Thank you all.

I agree for close images if you can find a used 16-45 for under $200 it's a great lens, though it can be a little fragile.

An 18-55WR will let you go out in all weather, since your K20D is weather resistant. This is a big safety factor.

You'll want to clean the rubber gaskets on all the doors with a damp cotton swab. Just water, you want to get rid of dirt which might interrupt the seals.

If budget is your concern, then i have no problem suggesting Pentax 18-55 WR, or tamron 17-50.
Read Adam's review on the 18-55WR for more info.
However, if you can spend a little extra $ for a little more versatile lens that you will keep throughout your learning, then the tamron can be an great investment. Great IQ and control with the 2.8 constant aperture. I got mine for 250$.
