I think it's more in line with the style of Pentax/Ricoh strategy...

Launch high, then offer rebates and what-nots to appear enticing...

Oh.. The psychology of human mind...

I have noticed this lately in the UK @ Amazon

As a recent buyer of the K-30 and new to DSLR I looked long and hard at getting this or the DA 50mm 1.8. I went for the later for greater low light capabilities.

I got body only, primarly for photographs of newborn.

Did I make the right choice? Is it worth buying the DA 35mm 2.4 also? What don't pentax have a 1.8 like Canon/Nikon, or am I missing it?
It's super sharp at f/2.4. 2.4 is better than 2.8. I have no regrets at all about buying this lens, and I've shot with D7000/35mm f/2.8 (my brother in law has that setup, plus the 18-55 kit lens from Nikon). I personally think the Pentax has nicer colors and I can't seem to take a bad picture with it.
The Nikon is nice too, but I don't think it covers the full frame (the 35 2.4 does, I haven't used it yet on my film camera but I plan to).
Edit: actually it seems like the Nikon does cover FF as well... but vignettes a lot in the extreme corners. The Pentax doesn't.

I have the 35/2.4, and original thought it was a pretty good lens. Then I got the older Sigma 30/1.4 and used it almost exclusively for a while for the speed, and I liked it. Then I recently went back to playing with my 35/2.4 again and it blows the Sigma away in every aspect except speed. The color, contrast, micro contrast, sharpness, CA control, and lack of distortion are simply phenomenal (at least in the RAWs from the 5IIs).

After this, I could not justify the performance of the Sigma for the cost, so I sold it. But I will still be interested in seeing how the new one looks.

Thanks for your advice.

After 48hs with the K-30 and 50mm 1.8 only-- I agree, its very restricting and I think I missed alot of contextual shots of my new childs birth. However, the DOF/bokeh is so dreamy, it blows me away-- this is someone coming from P&S.

Thank for your comments regarding the 35mm f2.4. Its tempting.

DA 35 f/2.4 is a gateway drug lens. Get anyone started on good primes and it is much more likely they will be in the market for more glass....
The 50 1.8 was my first step on this slippery slope.

I want something a little more tele now. Like 70-80 mm (digital)

I keep looking for the FA 50 1.4 and the FA 1.7 50's on the used market.

I have so far to go.

Just keep in mind that the FA 50mm has exactly the same field of view as the DA 50mm. Lots of confusion about this, but all lenses with a given focal length will have the exact same field of view on your camera. Just lenses made for a smaller format might have dark edges/corners (vignetting) because they don't cover the whole sensor/film plane. Also, the DA 35mm f2.4 and FA 35mm f2.0 have the same field of view.
That being said, the DA 70mm ltd is a very beloved lens, as is the DFA 100mm macro Just wait, one day you will save up and won't be able to resist anymore

Too late, you started the rumor, better take responsibility. Pretty soon someone will PROVE a new version is on the way by linking to a DPR forum thread that links to a blog post that links to a Chinese forum post that links back to this thread...

Right, probably with a link somewhere in that line to, dare I say it, gulp................................ RH's site. Now THAT would be absolute proof.

I thought of that linkage, but left it out - even *I* have certain standards.

Maybe just an SMC --> HD?
I would say this in inevitable, as Ricoh consolidates its branding through the Pentax lens lineup. Its unlikely they will stick at just the Limiteds. That said they may opt for something other than the "HD" moniker, as that is associated with optical coatings that may not be cost-appropriate for the lower-end lenses. They will likely just convert the green ring to red, add some extra-special-sounding-non-feature, and raise the price $50.

If the 35/2.4 is selling for a price that interests you, just grab it. (Though you may want to consider a used smc 35/2.8 macro limited, as they are pretty cheap these days since the HD versions got released.)

price back up on amazon

The 35mm f2.4 was down to £89 this morning but seems to be back up at £119 again. Is this the case in the states?

It's $144 on Amazon, I think it's what the price has been for the last few weeks.
