A new DA 35mm f2.4?

Recently I saw a couple pricewatch threads with really really huge discounts on the DA 35mm f2.4 lens, a budget lens loved by many. Makes me wonder, is there a reboot around the corner? Maybe just an SMC --> HD?

..or is Pentax just trying to sell it off before the Sigma 30mm becomes widely available?

Just speculation btw, I have no sources to back this up. Wondering if anyone does.

I think they're just trying to get the lens to move, especially for beginners new to the Pentax system.

DA 35 f/2.4 is a gateway drug lens. Get anyone started on good primes and it is much more likely they will be in the market for more glass....

I've owned three of them.

While it is a good lens for its price, I think people will outgrow it quite fast and want something that is either faster or has a unique quality.

Still, it's one of those "can't really go wrong" lenses.

Years and decades from now, there will be zillions of those things floating around, similar to how there are zillions of 50mm f2's floating around right now.

I think so too.. this and the 50mm 1.8 DA have been on discount since the fall of last year.. likely just pushing beginners into the system. Cheap, decent primes..

Would like to see a 21mm or wider plastic prime too some time.. as well as maybe a 70mm

I have noticed this lately in the UK @ Amazon

As a recent buyer of the K-30 and new to DSLR I looked long and hard at getting this or the DA 50mm 1.8. I went for the later for greater low light capabilities.

I got body only, primarly for photographs of newborn.

Did I make the right choice? Is it worth buying the DA 35mm 2.4 also? What don't pentax have a 1.8 like Canon/Nikon, or am I missing it?

2 things to keep in mind:

1. You can never have too many lenses
2. When shooting indoors you can almost always get closer to your subject if the lens you have available/on the camera is shorter than ideal; but often it is not possible to get far enough away if your lens is too long. I think you will find you are going to need something wider than 50.

Pentax has an FA 31 Ltd f 1.8, which is one of the best lenses you can have, but it is nowhere near the price range of the DA 35.

The Sigma 35mm f1.4 is another good choice, as is the 30mm f1.4

In other words: You can crop an image but you can't shrink your subject especially not Great Aunt Harriet stuck at the buffet table!

Hmmh yeah, but the DA 35mm has been around for a long time and a revamp might make it more attractive? New look, rounded aperture blades, HD coatings, maybe something else. Then again, if Adam says no, then its a no

Considering you can get a brand new one for 100 pounds? I would definitely go for it. The difference in FoV between 35mm and 50mm is pretty big, and even though the DA 35mm is not the brightest lens, it is very sharp and has fast AF. You can further improve your DA 50mm and DA 35mm by buying lens hoods for them (plenty of threads about this btw)

Agreed, a cheap wide prime would be nice! Though it's easier said than done on APS-C.

So is a cheap telephoto, or any fast lens, apparently.

It worth the money!
I went the exact same way, first bought DA50, and recently bought the DA35, even though it's slower, but most of the times I stop down my DA50 to f/2.4 to get sharp results, and DA35 is sharp right from f/2.4! so it's pretty fast and good for what it is.
