FA 77mm f1.7 Ltd.

Yep, the FA 77mm f1.7 Ltd...

Today, while out on a walk to the store, I experienced the darnedest thing. I had the K-3 with FA 77 attached and was adjusting Av and cranked the lens down to f1.7, which confused the heck out of me. I was able to change the lens back to 5.6, 8, 10, etc. and bring it back down to 2.4, 1.8, 1.7... The weirdest thing I found about it was that my shutter speed would adjust as well, f1.8=1/6000s and f1.7=1/8000. Of course foolish me deleted the photos taken at f1.7 before thinking to post any or check EXIF.

Anyhow, I think I recall reading something about this somewhere, but can't find any info for the life of me. I never recall this "error" on my K-r, but I will admit this lens gets neglected as it seems... bland.... to me, but I am trying to like it!

Anyone know anymore about why my 77 1.8 is becoming a 77 1.7?

Edit: Also, I cannot crank it to f1.7 anymore, it stops at plain old, slow f1.8...

I'm curious too, my DA 50mm f/1.8 does the same thing one in a while (on K5). I always thought it was the mechanical aperture thingy that acted up a little. Never noticed the shutter speed however. My guess is your pictures would have been slightly under exposed (0.1 stop) because the aperture on the lens cannot physically open any wider.

The FA77mm f1.8 is a f1.8, not f1.7 lens. I do not know how and why your K-3 would read f1.7, but there is no FA77mm f1.7 ever produced by Pentax.

Try cleaning your lens contacts and upgrade to the latest firmware. Hopefully that'll fix the glitch!

I hope the next time I put my FA77 on my K-3 the aperture flexes wide to give me even more light.

There was a lens that did this to me once on the K-5 or an earlier body. Sorry, I can't remember for sure which lens - it could have even been the FA77 (which I no longer have).

So I don't think I'd worry about it too much.

But few of us consider the FA77 bland. The only reason I sold mine was I wanted the FA*85 (which I also like). But I was happy with my copy of the FA77. It produced some wonderful images.

Is there something wrong with yours, or do you simply have a style of shooting that doesn't take advantage of it? Perhaps your tastes run differently than most FA77 owners?

Alright, got a little more information on this...

K-3 is running the most current firmware. I can get this error to happen when pointed at bright light (see attached photo). When I first saw this, it was not pointed at a light, but rather in the general direction of a chickadee with bright back lighting, afternoon sun. The shutter speed was still floating around 1/6000 and 1/8000. So ignoring bad technique and all that mess, I can reliably reproduce this error (on the K-3, haven't tried K-r).

Now that I have figured out what conditions this occurs under, I can sleep at night. I am not too concerned about why, how, what, etc any of this means. It was just an interesting observation.

However, I did also note that the camera would not take a photo (this time?) at f1.7, instead it would take the photo at f2.0 or f2.4. I assume this is because the max shutter speed it 1/8000 ISO 100, so it has to automatically drop the Av to avoid self-destruction.

As long as you've got an FA77 that takes good photos, that's what matters. And most FA77s are good copies, I believe.
