tele zoom question

Hi all
If you can stand another question about zooms that would be great. I have a K10D and as some of you may know, I am going to Kenya in september on a safari. I was waiting for the Pentax 55-300 to arrive and figured I'd get that. Now I see that Tamron has a 28-300 for Pentax. Which would be the better, most useful lens for my trip considering quality of glass, features and ease of use?

I have neither lens. But if I was going to Kenia, I'd get the longest, fastest, sharpest telephoto lens I can afford plus the best teleconverter I can get. They say there's no 'to long' lens for wildlife shots (which I suppose you're going to take), only 'not long enough' ...

I have a pre-digital Tamron 28-200 which can give quite good, sharp results, but my keeper rate is relatively low. Sharpness can be fine, but under ideal circumstances only, or if you have plenty of time for the subject. I'd expect the later (Di) Tamrons to be a bit better.

I think I would get something like a 70-200 f2.8 (coming out soon from T. and S.) and a decent 1.4x or even 2x teleconverter. Or a 'Bigma' ...

from what i have read on these forums, for safari, get the longest lens you can afford

a general rule about zooms is that the higher the zoom ratio, the worse the quality. no one is sure what the DA 55-300 will be like, but judging on othe responses on the DA 50-200, it shouldn't be bad. the tamron 28-300 hasn't received the most favourable of reviews, but if you're seeking an all-in one solution, consider the tamron / pentax 18-250. it will be easier to use, probably be but it will be a bit weak on the extreme ends.

See this post, and the general discussion in this thread.

Find an F2.8 70-200mm zoom in a hurry, Otherwise get a BIGMA.

You will want effectively F5.6 at 400mm or longer and faster. You are spending a lot on the trip, don't miss out on the photos because you don't have a lens

Edit note, My two combos are SIgma APO 70-200 EX + Sigma 2x TC and Pentax 300mm F4 plus Pentax 1.7x AF TC

This gives me a 500mm F7 and a 400mm F5.6 both autofocus.

I don't know your budget, but if i was on safari shooting wildlife i would go with any of these and a tamron 1.4x tc:

DA* 300mm f/4
F* or FA* 300mm f/4.5
FA* 300mm f/2.8

my secondary lens would be the Pentax SMC-DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM

third set, 21 or 31mm ltd

* i got one zoom in there

If only one zoom, it would be the Bigma, ie 50-500mm Sigma
