funky looking lens

Is it just me or is the 40 f2.8 lens really strange looking?

it's def not a looker ... looks better w/o the Lens hood
maybe it's strange because it's not what people normally think of as an SLR lens?

Well, people from other brands wish they can have pancake lens we have.. and we are saying it is strange looking..

For me it looks abnormal but in a very good way. I think it is really cute. I love it.
For me strange does not mean bad, it is just different and interesting.

i love how the takumar lenses look on the k10d, its like small... lol but the 40mm pancakes... oooh so flat

it looks weird to most (the average) canikon folks because they think that having a DSLR means having the biggest honkin' telephoto zoom they can afford coupled to the front of it. they don't have a true understanding of a prime lens or of an appropriate lens for the task at hand, not to mention any sort of compactness and ease of use. I met a Nikon user the other day downtown (savannah, georgia) who apparently didn't know what a prime lens was when I asked him why he was using a telephoto zoom to take candid street shots. (street photography) which makes up most of my photographic 'portfolio'. So I can imagine that they would give very strange looks to the DA 40mm but personally I think it looks great.

It looks like an oversized body cap.

I hadn't thought of that but I bet on camera it does look sort of like a body cap with a picture window.
