Which lenses work well with macro tubes?

Hi,

I am reading "Cambridge in Color" article on macro tubes, and they mention that many non-macro lenses have poor quality when used with tubes - they are simply not designed to focus this close.

What is your experience with that? I would mount a 25mm tube on DA40mm limited, or on a smc takumar 55mm F1.8.

Normally the point of tubes is to go beyond 1:1 magnification, so if the lens you're using doesn't offer that to begin with, you may as well just use a dedicated macro lens.

If you don't have a macro lens, then you will at least need a lens with an aperture ring and good manual focusing- so the 55mm fits the bill.

The Takumar 55mm f/1.8 would be your best bet - it is always best to use a fast lens when using extension tubes as the viewfinder become dimmer as the lens is physically further away from the focal plane. The speed of the takumar 55mm f/1.8 will help with focusing, and the lens is optically superb at any focus distance.
