Need some advice on Sigma APO EX100-300 f/4 DG

I have been looking into the purchase of Sigma APO 100-300mm f/4 DG (around $1000) and was wanting to know if anyone has any experience with this lens? The things I've read in print about this lens is positive feedback, however, this was from reviews the retailer posted. Any comments are welcome.
K10D Pentax lenses include, 100mm macro, 12-24 f/4 wide angle, 50-135mm 2.8, kit lens 18-55mm, 50-200mm

I've used this lens on a 40D, it's huge and damn heavy, but damn nice IQ and focuses fast ( I had non hsm older version ).

I'm planing to add one to the K20D setup I have as I don't tink I can wait for the 60-260.

He just got one and reports it to be a fine lens. You might want to send him a PM. He also has the DA*300 f4 so he'd be a good one to tell how well the Sigma hold up against the Pentax. Btw, don't buy this on Ebay. Every one I've seen go there has sold over $1050 which is more than you can get it from Adorama.

Javier just mentioned there is no difference between the DA*300 and the Sigma 100-300.
There are some shots on Page 19 of the TAMRON TC thread in this section.

I wouldn't do it. Seen far too many reports of the focusing mechanisms in these having endless problems.

Are you sure you are speaking about the 100-300 f4? I dont remember reading anything particularly special about problems with this lens. Maybe you are refering to the 100-300 f4.5-5.7, which is a completely different lens.

I guess the way I was looking at it, the telephoto 100-300mm gave me a bit more versatility, as opposed too a 300 prime which I think, is a bit more costly. I'll keep looking at the photo gallery to possibly find shots made with this lens. Thanks to all responses.
B.T.W. currently I feel the best lens I own and keep on the body most of the time, is the DA *smc 50-135

I don't have direct experience of this lens but it was the one I was going to buy until I heard the DA*300 was in production. I looked at scores of photos taken with the Sigma with and without TCs and found the IQ impressive. Some people on other forums commented that they weren't as happy with IQ when used with a TC but it looked pretty good in the samples I saw. I opted for the DA*300 hoping that IQ especially with TCs would be a little better over a zoom, plus the SDM, and weather sealing. Someone in another thread who has both lenses seemed to be casting doubt on whether the IQ of the DA 300 was any better, which would be disappointing. Also I understand that some of the Sigmas come with HSM for Pentax. The info in the past has been it wasn't available and this had been another thing which had put me off. Looks like the info was wrong.

The understanding I have is that only "newly released" Sigma lenses for the Pentax mount have had HSM.

That is focal range/f-stop combos not recently available in Pentax mount. Such as the 17-70 (available in Pentax mount for a while) is not HSM and the 100-300 (same as 17-70 in terms of Pentax-K availability) is not HSM and likely will not be for a while, but the upcoming (new) 70-200 re-release will be HSM.

I am greatly tempted by the upcoming 70-200/2.8, but if the 100-300/4 were released as HSM I would strongly consider that instead - the extra 100mm would be excellent for airshows (the first time I have wished I had something longer than my Pentax 50-200. I have a Tamron 70-300 now but have never been "ecstatic" that I had it, just due to lack of need for the reach since the last airshow I went to which was before owning the 70-300. That said, the 70-300 has replaced my 50-200 completely.)

Re HSM and the Sigma 100-300 I was referring to Javier's post here:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/19694-tamron-t...r-pics-19.html

unless I have misunderstood what he is saying.

The Sigma 100-300 EX DG IF APO f4 is an excellent lens and will produce excellent images.

There are two reviews (one mine) on this lens in the Third Party Lens Review section of this forum.

It is quite sharp and handles dedicated extenders fairly well.
