I don't believe you.

Aren't you a student who only joined at the end of last year and posted questions in the Beginner's forum?

His profile shows he's been a member since December of 2010. It's easy to get members confused.
The OP reminds me a lot of someone who used to post here regularly. I've tried Really Hard but I just can't remember the user name though.

Tests like those on Lenstip/Optyczne show that the IQ does match,
even though the DA 20-40 is the only Limited zoom.
For example, the best center resolution of the DA 21
is better than the best center resolution of the zoom at 20mm,
but the situation is reversed when it comes to edge resolution.
At 30mm, the best edge resolution of the DA 20-40
is within a few percent of the best edge resolution of the FA 31.
Of course, resolution is only one aspect of IQ,
and in areas like flare resistance, the Limited zoom is outstanding.

I do think the DA20-40 could be considered a traveler lens. I don't think the IQ matches most other Limited lenses (perhaps the DA40, which I've always considered the weakest anyway).

The DA*16-50 is far from a perfect lens (no lens of its class is), but I have no intention of trading it in for (or supplementing it with) a DA20-40 which seems to have been completely bypassed by the "pixie dust fairy."

But if you do get one, let us know what you think - I just haven't seen it in the photos, and I've been looking. I see IQ I'd expect from a Pentax zoom that would cost about half that price, at the most. Which is why some people still like it, I'm sure. The IQ is "good enough" for their standards, and it's small and well built, so they just live with the price. But if this is Ricoh's vision of the future, I'm worried.
I should say that my attention was drawn to the DA20-40 through another Forum member who lives close by, and who shares a startlingly-similar lens lineup to mine (except he doesn't have the DA*16-50). He's been an early-adopter of the 20-40 and esteems it highly, although I don't think he's posted any images from it here. Unfortunately, he's gone off travelling around the country, so I can't try it in a deliberative fashion.

I'm not rushing into buying one right now, as I'm hoping the actual selling price will be a bit lower some time soon, but I'll certainly chime in with an opinion if and when I do.
