Not true... got a brand new 50-135/f2.8 in Shinjuku last December 2013. The box outside with label "Pentax - A Ricoh company Pentax Ricoh Imaging Co. Ltd" assembled in Vietnam.
Different lens. I'm talking about the 16-50.

Well, you may be correct, but when I purchased the 50-135/f2.8 there in Japan, they also have the 16-50f2.8 there brand new. In Japan, the market is very different from here in North America.

I had lots of troubles with my copies of 16-50. The first one died shortly after the purchase. It was replaced by a brand new one. The new one lasted some years and had been serviced 3 times or so, until I contacted a Pentax Europe representative who agreed to send me a brand new lens in exchange for a defective one. The difference in image quality was impressive. More info in this thread : https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/254948-verd...-f2-8-a-3.html

Being in/near Houston, there might be the possibility of finding someone local to you looking to sell and you could maybe meet and try the lens out for yourself. If so, that would surely be the best way to make sure you are satisfied with the performance of the lens.

Hey, good idea! Why didn't I think of that? Houston is big enough - there ought to be somebody around here selling a 16-50 every so often. Now if I can just find them.

Both of my new DA*'s bought this year, the 16-50 and 50-135, were in Hoya packaging. The Pentax market here in Finland is relatively tiny, all the big retailers sell Canikon or m4/3, so old Pentax stock is not uncommon. The 50-135 I got last week was a "demo" model that had been on the shelf for display, but I got a nice 100 discount on it. Both have been working fine so far, but it's really early days. We get a two year warranty in the EU so I'm not really worried about SDM or other issues.

I just dialed in the AF fine adjust on the 50-135 today (-2) and the 16-50 is dead on 0, both on my K-5.
