100-300mm f/4 or 70-200 f/2.8 + 2x TC

Hello.
I need lens for shooting football and occasionally for Wildlife. I have K20D (crop factor -1.5)
What is better? (Seconhand)

Sigma 100-300 f/4 APO EX for 630USD
-faster focus
-f/4
-bigger (82mm)
-150-450 f/6 w/crop factor

or

70-200 f/2.8 + TC Sigma APO 2x DG for 630USD
-f2.8
-smaller (77mm)
-105-300 f/4.2 w/crop factor (x2 210-600 f/8.4 - will this work?)

I may be wrong, but the camera crop factor shouldn't affect the max aperture. f2.8 is f2.8. If I'm wrong, please chime in and I'll learn something new.

I confess I've never used either, but the 100-300 has such a good reputation I'd be hard-pressed not to choose it. And if you can add a TC later, you've really extended your reach for skittish critters.

300mm is minimum for wildlife plus if you can find that lens for that price it's a steal ...if you are shooting indoors the 2.8 might come in handy for light...otherwise crop factor will not affect what you see

Yeah, ignore the crop factor it has nothing to do with this. And since both lenses are being used on the same camera it can be ignored completely.

You will lose 2 stops of light with the 2x TC. So the 70-200 will be f/5.6. Ok, but nearing the limit for reliable auto focus.

The 100-300 is the clear choice here IMHO, with the exception that it will be bigger.

well the 70-200 become 210-600mm if I am not mistaken.

Thnaks guys. But still.. 2.8 - Low depth of field is better for sport shots. But I will probbably buy the 100-300.

You won't get f2.8 with your 2x TC, yuo'll loose two stops with it.

300mm f4 has a narrower DOF than 200mm f2.8, for the record.

I'd go with the 100-300 if you want the reach. The other option (more expensive, somewhat more polyvalent) is the 60-250 f4.

Here are Dadipentak's examples - he used the Sigma 100-300/4 for virtually all his sports shots: G V LAX 2014 - Dadipentak

Here's where I briefly discussed this with him: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/115-pentax-k-5/115277-k-5-sports-photography-114.html

I'm sure there are many others here who do the same.

I understand your desire for a faster aperture - and you might be right some of the time (especially at the wide end). But the 100-300/4 may not be as far off as you imagine. FWIW, when shooting action with primes, I typically use f/3.5 at 85mm or 135mm, and f/5 at 300mm.

A closer match would be:

70-200 f2.8 + 1.4X TC = 98-280mm f4.0 vs the 100-300 f4.0

I have this combination and it works pretty well. I do not have the 100-300 to compare to, but I have no complaints about IQ with this setup and it has the advantage of being a 70-200 f2.8 lens when you do not need the reach or when you need another stop.

It also costs much less money to buy the 70-200 + 1.4x TC than the 100-300 as the 100-300 is out of production and only comes up for sale once in a while. I have not seen one for sale recently for less than $1,100 - $1,200.

Well there's your answer! You'd better get the 100-300 if it's both available and half-price!
