50 mm vs 55 mm

Thanks for all the great replies, especially the extra research and reading some have offered. I actually asked the question because of the fun I am having with my Canon FL 55 mm f 1.2 that I have converted from FD/FL mount to K-mount.

For my use - mostly taking pictures of the family outdoors - 50mm and 55mm are quite different on APS-C. As has been said, 55mm is the equivalent of the 85mm lenses for FF. And 50mm is equivalent to 75mm - math doesn't work that way - 55 FF should be 83 APSC - but in practice, I believe it).

I can still use the 50 as a "long normal" lens. The 55, whenever I try to use it, seems to really fall into telephoto territory. I know most people say 50 to 55 isn't a big difference but on digital, it does feel big... at least to me.

Interesting question. Don't know the history behind it, but modern day 55mm lenses tend to be more "premium" than 50mm ones. This is probably more to do with engineering, 50mm lenses can also be very expensive and Im sure someone can make a cheap 55mm, but that is how things appear to be right now. I remember reading a blog by a portrait photographer who claimed 55mm on APSC tends to make more flattering portraits than a 50mm. He talked mostly about the distortion and perspective due to the distance between photographer and subject. He refused to use 50mm lenses for portraits, even though they might be cheaper or faster. 55mm to 85mm on APSC, and 85mm to 135mm on film was his ideal for portraits.
