Sigma 20mm 1.8 vs sigma/tamron 17-50 2.8

I've been offered a sigma 20mm 1.8 for a pretty decent price but after looking at reviews, it doesnt seem very usable at 1.8 but pretty good at 2.8-4.0.
How does it compare to a 17-50 f2.8 zoom at the same focal length and aperature?

I had one and vastly prefer my Tamron 17-50. I sold the 20 f/1.8 because it didn't seem all that sharp. It is also a huge lens, not that that bothers me, but definitely bigger than the Tamron 17-50.
