Isn't that bridge in Charleston?

It's in Savannah, GA.

I am impressed ... I would have expected PF with the cables on the bridge with the sky behind for sure.

Even the noise isnt too bad on the heavy crops ... especially at ISO800 handheld.

For a consumer lens ... this is very good ... colour rendition isn't bad either.

Will have to wait and see what these are like price-wise when they are available in Oz ... and then check to see what it is like with O/S pricing.

Looks much better quality than my FA-J 75-300mm (and I have a good copy from what I have seen as well) ... with more range to boot .. as I find sometimes I'd like to get a little wider than 75mm (without changing lenses while out and about).

Hmmm.

Those shots look excellent, frankly. I'm keeping my Tammy 70-300 because I love the sharpness and close 1:2 focus, but I'd definitely consider this lens if I didn't have that.

Let's hope they keep the quality control high this time. If they do, Pentax really made a winner here. (Thanks Ed.)

That lens is slowly inching it's way towards my camera bag...creep...creep...creep....
The earliest I might be able to order it is this weekend, so I may give Calumet a call on Saturday to see if they still have any in stock. If they do, out comes the CC, as I'd like to have this lens before the 17th when I leave to go to Tennessee for a week.

I called Calumet yesterday and they do not have it in stock as yet. I haven't found one place as yet that has one.

Great shots. But, I would sure like to see a shot of a Bird in a tree with a bright background. My Tamron is virtually unusable in that scenario.

Thanks for the review and pictures. Very impressive. I'm interested in this lens and particularly the close focus function. Would you be able to post some shots of some sort of identifyable small object like a coin or watch so we can get an idea of it's ''macro'' ability?

Thanks
Tony

Hmmm...that's where Ed got his from. Maybe they just ran out of what they had and are waiting for more. I'm hoping to get it by no later than the 16th because I'm leaving for a weeklong trip on the 17th and would like to take the lens with me if I could get it before then. If not, I guess it will be the wider-angle trip because my 100-300 is currently up on Fleabay with bids.

The dedicated macro is on the way, though. I'll post LBA pics once I get it and get a chance to play with it.

Did Calumet give you any idea of when they might get any 55-300s in?

I decided to take the plunge...

...and went ahead and preordered the 55-300 from Adorama, so this fine lens will be in my camera bag--it's just a matter of when. I'm hoping that it'll get here no later than the 16th, so I can take it on my trip, but if not, I guess I will either have to do without a telezoom or see about renting the 50-200 from cameralensrentals.com.

I can't wait.

The only places that do have this lens in stock are asking $400 for it.

Pentax smc PENTAX DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED - In Stock at OneCall.com

Adorama is great, but living in NY they charge me sales tax (~$30) so I think I'll wait until Calumet has them back in stock.

Wow... it seems an excellent lens, but I wonder if photos would be the same on a K10D.

In fact I was about to buy DA* 50-135mm but now I dont know what to do, there is quite a lot money difference and maybe not so much optically speaking...

Maybe it is better to get a 55-300 and another lens for the price of the DA* 50-135mm.

What do you think?

THanks.

i was thinking of the 50-135 as well and almost pulled the trigger since waiting for the 55-300 seemed like an eternity

but my rationalization is this. the 50-135 while an excellent lens is 2x the price of the 55-300.
and from the looks of these test shots, the 55-300 is no slouch, so i'll wait a little longer for the 55-300 to arrive in the market and will go for this one.

i figured i'd get me a new flash for the extra $$$ that would have otherwise gone to the 50-135.

Curse you Red Baron! :shakes fist:

So I've been REAL good. And I even told myself "I don't need any other long zooms, my LBA is under complete control."
Then you have to go and post some pretty good pics of a pretty good lens, and now I've got a serious case of lens lust all over again! It's all your fault!

Thanks for posting the sample pictures Ed! I've gone round and round about my next lens purchase and this helps narrow things down for me. I've not been as happy with my Tamron 70-300 on the istDS as I was with it on the ZX-7. PF anyone? This lens could replace my Tamron and leave me with some left to work on getting a DA 70 limited. It's all about finding a nice compromise for me but it would be nice to have something faster for indoor photos and kiddie soccer.
