Loving hearing the views. I tend to agonise over lens choice for trips! Personally the 16-50 is a no-brainer. I have a tendency to take mine together with the 8-16 and 60-250 and 1.4X HD TC. However, as you point out, this isn't the lightest kit. My formula is basically:
- Always take the DA* 16-50
- If there will be buildings / interiors, take the Sigma 8-16
- If there will be wildlife, or vehicles take the DA* 60-250 and TC
- If there will be plants, take a fast 50 (pref f1.2 or 1.4 - take your pic!)
- If there will be astro take some primes.
- If there will be portraits, take the DA*55 or DA*50-135
- DA*50-135 is also very useful for cars (especially parts of cars like badges, headlights etc. But never take this out with the 60-250!)
Fisheyes/macro don't tend to get out much. More's the pity! Note that this approach relies heavily on modern zooms. So while very flexible, the weakness is the price, the weight, and the flare resistance.
