Another possible reason:
focusing problems.
It is true, hard to focus on DSLRs with default focusing screens.
But I installed split focusing screens, or the Canon E-ES screen on almost all my pentax DSLRs. So even when focusing is spot on, the soft effect is still stronger than I remember on film cameras.

A month or so ago I decided to dust off some of my soft focus lenses.

I would really like to be playing with my recently acquired Tamron 70-150 Soft, but it's been raining so much here lately that I'm seriously thinking of drawing up some plans for an ark.

I had tried a couple of soft lenses several years back when I first got the K10D and wasn't as pleased with the results on digital as I had been with film. Looking back on it now, it was more than likely user error and focusing issues than anything else. I have been shooting with them more in recent weeks, and while not quite there yet, I'm starting to feel a little bit better about my results than I first did with the K10D.

Here is a photo I took in April with the K3 and the K85mm/F2.2+1.4X-L tele-converter, shot at around F4.
