I think I'll put the $600 toward a prime tele with greater reach. A 1.4x only adds 40% more reach to any tele.

Good question. The DA 560 is close to $7k, so that's off my short list. Sigma 500mm f/4.5 looks possible at around $2500 but I need to do more research ... and save my cash!

It really adds 40 % to (almost) all your lenses - at a minimal increase in weight
