DA 10-17 Lens Cap

I wanted to get a fisheye lens and jumped on the Rokinon 8mm for $199. Later that same day, I ran across a deal on a new DA 10-17 for $250. The lens was in the display case and is perfect except for missing the lens cap. Adorama and B&H sell the replacement lens cap for $40. Does anyone know where I can get a cheaper version for this lens?

You could just use a regular 58mm lens cap. The sides will be exposed, but not by much, and overall the front element should still be pretty much protected.

That's pretty clever!

The spring loaded clamps on that lens cap must get dangerously close to the front element.

i found a soft pvc pipe cap end in the Home Depot plumbing section that fit perfectly over the front of this lens. Not pretty but cheap and functional

Get a Hood Hat from OP/Tech. I have these now for all my lenses except the 55-300 (I still use the wrap pouch that it came with).

I checked for that. It does come close, but a piece of paper is able to slip from one open side through to the other with no resistance, which I take as a sign that there is space between the front element and the cap. Also, the cap is quite sturdy, and I can't imagine it flexing, even in extreme heat.

Of course, I've only tested it with the cap I had pictured there. Your mileage may vary with other cap designs, Pentax or otherwise.

For my previous fisheye, I used three plastic-rimmed 67mm filters permanently slipped over the outside, then a 67mm cap. That works on the Zenitar also. They worked so well, I forgot to remove them when I took some shots with my film camera. The DA 10-17 exterior diameter is something less than a 62mm filter opening. I have a short metal 58mm thread hood with a 62mm opening that slips over it. I think that would work OK with felt lining and a cap on the end.

It probably will work. The outside diameter on my 10-17 is right at 60mm, and I found a comment on flickr from someone who is using that cap on the Tokina version of the 10-17. The Tokina also has a built-in petal hood with 58mm filter threads on the inside (a fairly unusual feature), so if the hoods aren't from the same mold, they are very similar in dimensions.

Thanks. I just ordered this item and I'll update the post after I receive it to let you know if it fits.
