Super tak 50MM f1.4 holds up well against modern glass

I shot 5 different fast 50's both wide open and stopped down to F5.6. Used Manual settings except for Auto ISO. I locked the shutter speed at 1/320th. I applied the same exact post process to all images in Adobe Camera raw. I used a Sony A7r as the test platform.

Asahi Super Takumar F1.4 and F5.6

Canon 50L F1.2 and F5.6

Minolta MD Rokkor F1.2 and F5.6

Minolta MD Rokkor F1.4 and F5.6

Minolta MD Rokkor F1.7 and F5.6

The only modern glass in that line-up is the Canon 50/1.2 L. I would retitle as "Canon 50/1.2 L Holds Up Well To Vintage Glass" Assuming, of course, that the Canon is EF rather than FD. If FD, then they are all fairly vintage.

The leica M 50/1,2-1-0,95 are better than yours. At least wide open.
In bokeh, the roklor 1,2/58 has the best bokeh ar f/2 or 2,8. Far better than the st 1,4/50.

Surely its accepted that the super tak 1.4 is a fine lens, and I have no problem with a different lens being "better" in some regard, there are many fine lenses out there.

Cant we just accept that the super tak 1.4 creates fine images, and that Leica have created some of the finest optics ever made, and also there are many Rokkor lenses that are excellent as there are also excellent Nikon Canon Olympus, Zeiss etc etc lenses.

Sure why not. But until the information is passed from photographer to photographer magically, people will continue to discover it for themselves. Hence forums, hence hands on testing and personal verification if online reading.

That is a good point. Hardly a month goes by without a question on this forum regarding whether a not-available-new lens is design compatible and optically capable with their new dSLR. I usually answer that an older lens in good condition bends light as well as it ever did and that even the newest lenses draw from long-standing designs. A good example is the Zeiss Planar heritage of the DA 50/1.8. It is a decent optic with modern coatings, optimized (presumably) for an APS-C sensor, but for all practical purposes it is essentially similar to the score of 50/1.7 and 55/1.8 lenses in the Pentax line all the way back to the early 1960s.

My Super Tak is one of the best prime lenses I've ever used. In some ways its better than the DA50, but then again the DA50 has very smooth bokeh too and AF. They both have their own "look" and I choose which one to use based on that look (or if I need AF).
