43mm 1.9 protrusion

I will be out travelling in a few weeks and need to strip down my DSLR so that I can keep it in my coat pocket.
An obvious choice for lens is the 40mm 2.8 DA, but I have the impression that the 43mm is tiny as well.
I compared the lengths of the lenses and the 40DA is 15 mm, whereas the the 43FA is 27 mm.
I could not find any picture online, illustrating how far out the 43mm protrudes at its absolute minimum (with hood unextended and lens cap off) while mounted on a Pentax DSLR. I would be interested in a picture from the side like the one of the 21DA here:

Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2 Review - Lens Overview and Handling - Pentax Camera Forums

And one straight from above, like here:

http://www.natcam.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6...75283_18_3.jpg

So to anyone who can help me out: thanks in advance.

Dom

Think about the DA 40mm XS. I think it is the smallest APSC lens in the world. And optically its virtually identical to the 40mm ltd.

This site makes it look like the 43 is approximately the same size as the da70. Without hoods, the 70 is close on size to the 21. Ergo, the 43 without the hood is about the same size as the 21

I did exactly that at an event once.
I had a K-7 and DA21 / FA43 hoods removed sharing 1 lens cap. spare lens in the pocket.
They are almost the same length within a mm or 2.

I will take a side-by-side comparison this evening after work if no-one does in the meantime.

this is from the photozone.de review pages

Here are three shots of it on the K-r. Keep in mind the K-r is a tiny beast of a body.

The lens is small... but that shade... oh that shade

It would be easily pocketable (pants) without the shade/hood. A jacket pocket, I would say it is not too bad. A person can easily unscrew the hood and then it isn't that bad, just annoying.

Don't let that deter you, it is my best lens.

Keep in mind you can use the DA 40 hood on the FA 43 when you use it on an APS-C body. I use an aftermarket DA 40 hood on mine, works great.

Did not know. I will get the camera store to forward you your commission from my purchase. Thanks a ton. Now I can easily justify taking it to France.

The only limited lens I have handled is the 40mm. If understood you correctly, that protruding part of the hood cannot to be pushed in completely? Cf. picture.

There is another line to the right of your red line, that is where the hood comes out. I don't think I had the lens as large as it goes, or as small as it goes (in terms of focus). That is why a little bit protrudes from the focus ring.

Also, the hood screws on and off, does not push in. The lens cap slides over the hood. I would reference the Silver Ltd pics above.

To be honest, I would love to go check that focus distance, but I have a cat on me and will be stuck for an indeterminate amount of time.

I use FA43's hood on DA40.

DA21 and FA43 sizes. Well, they're almost the same.
There is less than 2mm difference with hoods removed. Comparison shots below.

... the DA70 is actually in between DA21 < DA70 < FA43 ... and the DA70 looks pretty much identical to the DA21
If you had already bought one, you could buy the other and your wife couldn't tell unless of course she caught you with both of them out at the same time

Too plasticky, mate. And I will lose that hood the very first evening.

I notice now that there is not such a huge difference between 43 and 40:
