Just some info for those looking to buy a Sigma 8-16, pentax mount.

Both B&H and Adorama list this lens discontinued. Phone contact with them confirmed the info on their web pages.

On page at the Sigma USA site, instead of a "buy" button, I encountered a "find a dealer" button when the Pentax mount option was selected. It is listed for $649 today (6/15/2014). I was unable to find a dealer using zip codes in my area, perhaps some of you might check using your zip and see if there is a dealer who stil has stock. Reporting your success might help those who both 1) want this lens, and 2) desire a USA warranty.

Since one PF review seemed to suggest a local dealer might be able to obtain the lens, I checked with my local Sigma dealer. He never replied. I called Sigma USA. The representative confirmed to me that this lens has indeed been discontinued in the Pentax mount. She further confirmed that dealers are unable to obtain any more stock.

Ebay prices with shipping range in price from $693 to $1008. Your individual search results may vary.

All of the offerings I found are from ouside the US. I contacted this site (the least expensive), and received the reply that the lens carried a 1 year Japanese warranty. He was further willing to assist/advise me in the event I needed to return the lens to Japan for service. That might be good info to ask before you buy.

Hope this info helps anyone intrested in this lens.

Did they offer any insight into why they discontinued the mount?

I've read a couple of threads here, which means I'm not very informed. But I haven't seen anything from Sigma.

The 18-35 was slow-to-Pentax because of high demand. Perhaps the 8-16 is in high demand in other mounts? It is a very nice lens.

Sigma does that with some regularity so it clearly reflects an (inexplicable to me) corporate strategy.

If your ability to build something is maxxed out, all else the same, you want to cut down on buildable combinations. If, in the time you take switching over to K-mount, you could've built 50 lenses, it just cost $15k or whatever to make the switch. Add in inventory/tracking costs, etc...

Even without the Sigma 8-16, a Sigma 10-20 could still be argued as the leading wide-angle zoom in Pentax-land. I'll be castigated but I've never found the Pentax 12-24 to be impressive.

I didn't think to ask the question. But I would imagine that had I asked, it might have been a stock answer. The topic is so sensitive that I could envision a preformulated response. You might get a better answer from a local Sigma dealer. I think back to Adam's interviews with Pentax.

Sigma produces their own line of camera bodies now. Regardless of how well their bodies sell, or don't sell, they have to support their own mount. Pentax mount would come in second.

I've wondered if this isn't an attempt to gradually to squeeze Pentax out in favor of their own brand. Naaaw!

A couple of weeks ago they still had the new Sigma 12-24 on the website in Pentax mount with a "backorder" button. So I ordered one, hoping that a few months from now I might be the owner of one of the first for Pentax. Next day I got a cancellation email stating, "Thank you for choosing Sigma products. I am sorry to inform you that we do not have the 12-24mm lens in Pentax mount. We never made this lens for Pentax it has been removed from our website."

Losing Sigma would be a huge blow against Pentax. . Let's hope they make some kick-ass cameras for Photokina!

They've always made the best APS-C cameras in the business. I think a more diverse line is req'd.

Agreed, infact it could very well be the downfall of the brand losing the third party lenses (the new Tamron 70-200mm doesn't appear to support K mount either). You would wonder why Sigma would take away the mount offering, surely its not that much extra cost to offer a mount?
