If you could make your own lens...

Without making something outrageous like a 8-600mm f1.4 lens, what is your perfect "feasible" dream lens (that is likely not a real lens)?

Make-up your lens specs. Have fun!

Is it...
  • HD Pentax-DA* 12-60mm f/1.8 ED AL [IF] (SDM+Screw) <-- My choice
  • 10mm f/1.4
  • 120mm 3:1 Macro
  • FA 43mm f/1.0
  • 500mm f/5.6 mirror
something else?

Your first choice would be great.

I'd add in a 300-800 f/5.6 WR.

Considering the size of Sigma's new 18-35mm f1.8, I can only imagine how huge a 12-60mm f/1.8 would have to be. The "SDM+screwdrive" bit made me laugh though.

For me the big weakness in Pentax-land is in enthusiast telephotos. I think a 500mm WR zoom lens would be welcomed by many, as well as a higher-quality/faster 300mm zoom option.

It is a dream lens, so it is nice and portable. I know in the real world it would be a large lens, but hey, it would be a cool lens to have. I would even take it as a 12-36 or a f2.8...

I originally only put SDM in there, but I know some people have had issues with it so I added the screw info. My 50-135 that I pre-ordered before release has been perfect for me. A great lens and zero issues with it, SDM or otherwise.

Build a top-of-the-line supertelephoto lens with a built-in extender like Canon did a little while back:
Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x Quick Review: Digital Photography Review
but at a lesser price, if possible... dream on !

85mm f1.4

50-135 f2.

135mm f1.8

100mm f1.8

I'd want to see each of these in high-end builds and budget friendly builds (with optics remaining in tact).

I don't think any of them are outside of the realm of feasibility.

Great idea for a thread, I like your first one too.

I would like these, I probably could not afford any of them:
DA 350-600mm f4-5.6 zoom WR
DA Limited 10-35mm f2.8 WR
DA Limited 10mm 2.8 WR

I'd settle for a Fa43/1.2 or even a f1.4.

I love the 40mm FL on 135 format. I go out with my M40/2.8 or DA40/2.8 XS on my film bodies and am content.

How about an oddball DA 27mm f/2.2 Limited? Between the 21 and 35 DA Ltds, half a stop slower than the FA31, so as not to step on toes. Sized similar to the 21 or 15 Ltds. I don't know, this is what first comes to mind.

The OP was about making up your own lens, but as an aside, the Pentax lens lineup could stick to a framework better... e.g., the DA35/2.4 and 50/1.8 are DA L's in all but name--plastic mount, no QS, no distance scale, no hood. Just call them DA L! The DA14/2.8 is a proper DA prime, given its features. And the DA* prime lineup is crying out for fast 24, 35, and 85 variants. (I love the DFA 100/2.8 Macro WR as a "pseudo Limited", but IMHO it makes more sense as a ruggedized * style lens.)

What I'm saying is, the DA, DA*, and Limited lineups should be filled out individually--a wide Ltd does not fill the void of no wide DA*. Wow I went off there. Forgive the OT rant.

16-80 f/2.8 DA* HD WR & a 80-200 f/2.8 DA* HD WR, both FF lenses (in the event they do bring out a FF camera anytime soon, so that way it can work on FF & APS-C cameras.)

I'd love the following zooms:
- HD DA* 16-85mm f2.8 ED AL [IF] AW
- HD DA 35-105mm f3.5 ED [IF] WR (a rework of the SMC Pentax-A 35-105mm)
- HD DA* 100-400 f4 ED [IF] WR (with matching 2x teleconverter)
And the following primes
- HD DA 10mm f2.8 ED [IF] WR
- HD DA* 135mm f1.8 ED AL [IF] AW
- HD DA* 300mm f2 ED AL [IF] AW (with matching 2x teleconverter)
- HD DA* 1200mm f5.6 ED AL [IF] AW
One can wish can he not!

An 18mm-350mm walk around lens that actually is great ALL through that entire range, that doesn't weigh a ton. If I had that I wouldn't ever need to change out a lens again, except for portrait special effects.
