I like my Pentax 12-24. Wonderful lens. Bit pricey, but a great lens.

I still like the 21 for my idea of what pixie dust should be.... but it's real hard to say one lens has it, and another can't. Maybe the pixie dust is in the scene. Who knows?

If someone sends me a 15, 31, 43 and 77, we'll really have a comparison.
I still say it's how many pixies are there to snort the dust.

If DA 35 is anything like FA 35, it's a great lens with great sharpness and colors, I just find the rendering is a bit "sterile." Nothing wrong with that though, with the K10D I actually find it produces very nice pastel colors. Not a big fan of the FA 35 with K20 or K-x though, but that's first world problems imo, as it's a great lens that I'd recommend to anyone.

I don't own any of the lenses normhead mentioned but my experience online browsing the lens clubs, his list is right on the money.

What 70-200? Are you thinking of the 80-200 f/2.8 from the film era?

I think he means Norm's F 70-210/4-5.6

Usually overlooked because it's a 25 year old slow consumer zoom...

Yes, appreciated only by those who own it.... a K-3 does speed it up a bit, but that just makes it more likely to tear the tendons in your wrist when it locks focus.

SMC Pentax-F 70-210mm F4-5.6 Reviews - F Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

From one of the reviews,

QuoteQuote:
If you are deciding between the above 3 lenses, the F70-210 is actually a very good compromise if you prefer the images you get with old glass rather than the new DA lenses.

Most of us have posted the high end Pentax lenses, but some of these older lenses have a unique character of their own. I think it's the lead in the glass, which is apparently no longer allowed.

This is a hard choice. So far I have spent 2 months trying to decide on a lens. Of course I don't have deep pockets so I'm trying to make my first purchase as satisfying as possible. Too bad there is not more of a choice when it comes to WR lenses. Some of these lenses sound good on paper until you read the entire review(s) and come up with Deal-Breakers. The 16-50mm and the 50-135mm have issues with the SDM motor, plus they are big and heavy. The 17-70mm f4 sounds pretty good until you read about outrageous softness in the 50-70mm range(according to some reviews). Personally I think the pancakes are too small and look dorky on the K5, sort like those tiny mirror-less cameras with HUGE lenses. The 20-40 is a beautiful lens but for the money I think 20-60mm/20-50mm would have been better. The 18-135mm which is weather resistant seems like a nice compromise, but it has so many issues that I would probably have to re-purchase a whole set of lenses that cover that range.

Oh well there is no such thing as the perfect lens, but the 16-45(non-WR) seems to be at the top of my list because of the extra wide angle which I like. Looks like a nice walk-around lens not too big not too small although I hear it is a little noisy.

in digital age and Pentax only offer APSC size (and CMOS sensor) camera, I doubt there is any use talking about 'look' of a particular brand.

for example FA*24mm looks really good in film days but lost it's magic in digital age....

My favorite is FA*85, FA77, and FA31.

Newer 16-50 and 50-135 (post 2011) should be OK regarding the SDM motor. Plus they are dual drive so they could use the camera's AF motor if the SDM failed out of warranty.

Also, setup that wouldn't cost too much would be a DA 17-70 plus the DA 55-300. The overlap means you could use the DA 17-70 until 50mm or so and then switch over to the 55-300 for over 50. But I haven't seen evidence that the 17-70 is so soft beyond 50 that it's unusable, in fact I've seen some good pictures taken at around 70 or so, stopped down a bit. If you have questions about the 17-70 IQ, go over to flickr and do a search on "michal sleczek 17-70"...

One lens I'm definitely going to get regardless if I get another lens is the 35mm f2.4. I heard great things about this lens and you can get them for under $200, under $100 used on eBay so why not !

And it's a great excuse not to spend $1300 on a 31 ltd., so your total savings is $1100.

Don't listen to norm on this, no matter how many 30-35mm you own, as a Pentax user the call of FA 31 is ever present.

Looks like these lenses made my list ahem(budget) The rating is in parenthesis.
1) 35mm f2.4 (9.14)
2) 50mm f1.8 (9.34)
3) 70mm f2.4 (9.3)
4) 16-45mm f4 (8.6)

Maybe by the time it gets cold I can get a nice WR lens even if its the 18-135m
