Had to check with my lens. I have never paid attention to this so far!
The blades do not disappear completely. Looks very similar to yours.

That is common for constant aperture zooms. The DA 16-50 lens could be 1.8 or 2.2 at wide end, and lens maker had to stop the aperture from complete wide open at wide-end. zoom to long end, aperture will be wide open (disappear).

Wouldn't the lens sell better as a 16-50/1.8-2.8? Maybe the IQ suffers too much at those settings?

I don't know. I guess it came from all manual film time, when photographer had to adjust exposure manually. With a constant aperture zoom, you can set exposure and zoom in and out without worrying about the exposure. I guess since then, a constant aperture became a symbol for "pro" class zoom. How many times have you heard people wish a zoom had constant F? For example, the new DA zoom?
I personally agree with you, that a maximum using of aperture (light) is better, unless the edges on wide end wide aperture is not acceptable. But I guess that is the market.
