Another Standard Zoom Standoff

The Sigma DC 17-70 is turning out to be a very good lens. Sharpness is there, color is rendering great, focuses fast. There is 2 things I'm not 100% happy with, I would like to see; f/2.8 throughout the zoom for indoor shots without flash. f/2.8 disappears pretty fast by about 22mm. Also, at 17-22 the edge detail is quite soft.

I've asked this before; can anyone give me some feed back on the Sigma EX 24-70. I know I'll lose the wide end and that the 24-70 is 'heavier', neither is an issue.. TIA

I can recommend Tamron 28-75. It is F2.8 throughout the range. Very sharp throughout the range as well.

If the QA was better, the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 could fit the bill as well. But that lens is new with QA issues resulting in FF or BF problems.

Another good alternatinve would be the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 Macro. Dont get the non-macro version.

Thanks for the info Stratario. However, I wouldn't want to lose the tele end of 70mm so the 16,17,18-50 class is out of the picture. The Sigma EX 24-70 is available locally whereas the Tamron is not.

I think the Tamron is much higher rated than the Sigma. For me it was worth ordering it from B&H. I had to pay 13% for GST & PST but in the end it is cheaper than buying locally.

there are quite a few canadian online sites besides henry's and vistek, not sure if they would have it or if they are more competitive: camera canada, mcbain camera, the camera store

I only buy locally, call me old-fashioned. I like putting the lens on the camera, trying it out in-store, etc.

Consider the subject finished. My LBA is getting the better of me atm and not giving me a chance to really try the 17-70 lens out more. So, with that I'll fight back and keep the 17-70 and not flip-flop anymore.

Love my Tamron! Actually it along with the Sigma 10-20mm are going to monopolize my camera for the most part.
