Two very similar Pentax lenses.

I was casually looking at the prices for budget zoom lenses (the Tamron and sigma 70-300s), came across these two:

Pentax SMCP-FA J 75-300mm F4.5-5.8 AF - £94 microglobe
Pentax 75-300mm F4.5-5.8 J P-FA SMC AL Lens £135.00 microglobe

The only difference I can see are price and colour. Oh, and 1g difference in weight. But perhaps I'm missing something. What's the difference?

most people tend to avoid this lens

Avoid this lens? This lens is a great value in "bang for the buck" in a semi-long tele. For those whom cant or don't want to drop a huge wadd, it fits the bill rather well and has some pretty decent reviews for an inexpensive lens.

There's good and bad results with this lens.
I have it and I can say it's not a bad lens .... I have seen much worse.

their shouldn't be any differences whatsoever in price or otherwise, its the same lens one silver the other black. its a budget lens simple as that. not necessarily bad but not great either.

well it's not that great, but for a similar price, Tamron and Sigma have better alternatives
Sigma 70 - 300mm Zoom Telephoto f4-5.6 APO DG (Pentax-Fit) Lens -£129
Tamron AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di AF Macro 1:2 Lens For Pentax digital

Funnily enough, those were the two I was pondering when I found this - the sigma seems to come in an APO and non version too.

Glad it wasn't just me with those pentax two, though!

I had the Pentax version (FAJ), and found it rather lacking, particularly at the long end. Sold it it after a very short use.
I have the Tamron DI LD model and find it is a better lens (for my purposes anyway) a bit of PF is evident in very glary light conditions. The Macro on this lens is a real plus.

Similar experience for me as well. I actually tried a Pentax 75-300. After 3 pictures I handed it back to the guy that let me borrow it. I could see on the preview screen how it performed at 300mm and just had to pass on that lens.

I also picked up the Tamron 70-300mm Di LD and found it to be VERY acceptable. There are a couple of informative threads - with many sample pictures, one for the Tamron and one for the Sigma. Check those out & make your choice.

I am a big believer in photography on a budget, and $150 is the most I've put down for ANY of the lenses in my bag at this point. Although I did spring for a 40 limited for a few days....
