Samyang 24mm t1.5

Just got my lens that I won from the "1st Samyang Optics SNS Exhibition".

A lovely 24mm f1.4, its a cine lens so reads t1.5 and comes with gears instead of rubber rings (and sadly no A setting).

Anyway its pretty sweet!

I noticed one problem with it though, it has no A setting so in video my k5 keeps the aperture wide open so I'd have to do the tinfoil trick or slightly dismount it... but it will work nice with my friends gh2's for video work.

I didn't have much time to test it and I'm off to hospital tomorrow to get my neck operated on (its been sore for around 4-5 years after a tonsillectomy) so not sure when I'll get to really play with it as I might have to watch what I'm doing after the op but I took a few grab shots after I played around and got that shot above .

They are all wide open.

Good luck with the op.
BTW, how on earth did you take the photo with the flying / exploded lens?

I'm confused. Why can't you just stop it down?

Because the lens doesn't report itself at all to the camera its acting as an M Lens.

In video my k5 locks the lens open with the aperture lever.

In photo mode none of the auto settings work including pttl so the onboard Flash will fire full power but you can stop the lens down.

Thank you.

It was pretty easy, I set my camera on a timer and took a few photos of me holding parts of the lens and used photoshop to mask out the parts I didn't need.

It was all done pretty quickly and im not to happy with the lens hood... I didn't even have a tripod as I had left lots of my gear at my studio as I will not be able to carry much.

I'll try post some bts pics later.

Whoa, I didn't know the Samyang Cine lenses come in K-mount! Too bad about the lack of A-setting, though. Wouldn't it be better to just replace the rubber rings with gears on a regular Samyang lens? You lose the T-stop markings, but you gain a lot of automation, no? I think they are optically identical

Maybe I'm confused, but I don't think so. Have you set your camera to allow aperture control via aperture ring? There should be no need for the lens to report itself as a manual lens, as manual lenses don't report themselves. Have you pressed the sgreen button with the lens mounted? I don't have a K5, but all of my lenses work well on my K-x in video mode.

All the settings are ok... I just tested it in live view before hitting record (duu). While actually recording I can change apeture.

I tried the green button in video and nothing but I forgot to try dof preview (another duu) as I figured live view would have gave me an accurate representation of what im go to record as it dose with an auto lens or when I use m42 lens.

The click less apeture is really nice. And it would be easy to convert an M Lens to do the same (a few screws and remove the ball bearing).

Sorry for any miss information, I've been doing video for a fair bit with my k5 but not with any M Lens and it caught me out!

Thank you.

I've updated the above post with some more test shots from the samyang all wide open, its a tricky lens to use (OVF doesn't quite show you whats really in focus but that could be because I wear glass's) but the results are rather nice I feel.

Manual focus is amazing on it even though I'm using a metal gear instead of a rubber ring, I don't know of the photographic version of the lens is the same but its a pleasure to use.

Still feeling very sore and have difficulty talking and moving my neck at times atm due to the op but once I'm better ill try get some non family samples

It's hard manually nail focus with any f1.4 lens, in my opinion. Using live view helps, when you can. Here's a screen shot from my copy of the lens, at f1.4 (shooting video on a Canon dslr).

Note: I was focused on the specular highlight in his eye.

The standard focus screen on Pentax bodies will not show differences in focus below f/1.8. I'm not sure about the EVF. You can replace the focus screen with an aftermarket Canon Ee-S precision matte focus screen adapted to Pentax to gain precious in viewfinder focussing below f/1.8. Here's the model for the K-3, for instance:

I have a custom split prism fitted to my gx10 which makes using the lens a bit easier, I didn't want to do that with my k5 as I would like to replace it with a k3 soon (although keep the k5 for video), I have an lcd loup that lets me use the LCD as a view finder so its much easier to manual focus but i've been trying it without any of these aids atm.. I really shouldn't be using the camera atm and should be resting
