Consider the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. It's a very cool lens to replace your 18-55 and let's you keep the wider angle than the 28-75.

A good choice...

yeah i think it's going to be the 28-75 in a walk.

i'll put the 50mm on my birthday list.

thanks for the help everyone.
I echo what most have said... I have both and wish I would have got the tamron first. It is a great lens even at 2.8... And like others have said, the 50 has not really been used since I got the Tamron (I really like it)

But the main reason I wish I would have got the Tamron first is that I would have had a chance to figure out what my most used focal lengths are before bought my first prime lens. The 50 is just a bit long for my indoor shots. And too short for my portrait shots.

From my tamron at F2.8 I have learned that the primes I need are the FA-35 or new DA 35 or maybe the Da 40mm and the FA 77 or DA 70. The 50mm while a great lens and a very good lowlight shooter, is just not quite the right length for my shots...

Enjoy your 28-75mm. I doubt I will ever go back to a zoom that is not constant aperture. You are going to like it.

Tamron 28-75 arrived today.

needless to say, there wasn't a banana in my pants, and I was happy to see it.

Can't wait to get out and use it!

In this case get the Tamron

basically an everyday walk around lens i guess.
thanks for the help so far.
I own both lenses. The Tamron is a better "all around" lens, but the Pentax FA 50 is a much better portrait and low light lens. I disagree with Ben K above, I personally think the FA is a tad sharper, but you could starve on the difference. The 50 has better bokeh (out of focus rendering) but the Tamron gets closer, wider and further. It certainly is more versitile, but I dearly love my 50's (I've got an old manual F1.2 also)

NaCl(but many have called me an 'incureable romantic' ...or worse)H2O

If I hadn't of gotten the 17-70, I probably would've gotten the 28-75. Now since I've had the 17-70, I've found that I have been using the wide end more than I thought I would when I first got it. The only thing I wish it had was the constant 2.8 aperture--the closest anybody will be getting to it is Pentax with the 17-70/4. I suppose that I could've gone with the Tamron 17-50, but then I also use the long end on the 17-70, as well.

This is yet another proof that we don't live in a perfect world (sigh).

I didn't think that I would want another 50, but I may have to change my mind on this one.
