I have seen a Vivitar 28/2.8 that had "SMS" printed on the front. Does anyone know what this means?

I have been looking for a 28/2.8 lens, and was about to opt for a Pentax M 28/2.8. Once I read what has been discussed here, I searched for the Vivitar 28/2.8 Close Focus, but I could only find the Vivitar 28/2.8 MC lens--some of which seem to have "SMS" printed on the front. Thus, is the "regular" Vivitar 28/2.8 worth it, or do I need the Close Focus version (Kiron?) in order to obtain the best performance?..or should I just give up and go with the Pentax M 28/2.8 I have on hold at KEH?

Thanks,
Glen

Hello.

After watching jsherman999's pictures with his lens I told myself that I WANT one!! But I tried to search for one and found two Vivitar lenses 28mm f2,8 but "Wide Angle" was on it and not "CLose Focus".

Serial number is also starting by 28... Can anybody tell me diferences between:

Vivitar 28mm f2,8 close focus wide angle

and

Vivitar 28mm f2,8 wide angle??

Thank you in advance.

I know 'leadbelly' in this forum has one, and at one point he was going to sell it. You may want to shoot him a PM with an offer.

Hello.

After searching for a while, yesterday I won on ebay a Vivitar 28mm f2,8 Close Focus Wide Angle. It has a A setting on the aperture ring so it will be easier for me to use and just hope I receive it well and it takes pictures as good as yours do.

Thank you, I will post some pictures as soon as I receive it.

By the way, I will probably put on sale my Pentax-F 28mm f2,8 so if anybody is interested just let me know. Maybe a thread on the Marketplace.

Thanks.

Hello.

Yesterday I finally received my Vivitar 28mm f2,8 Close Focus Wide Angle and I went outside to test it. It seems quite brilliant but I noticed that it overexposed quite a lot. Light was a bit hard (6pm in Spain!) but when setting exposure right at the center I noticed, later on my PC, that pictures where mostly overexposed.

Is that normal? Did you noticed something like this on any Vivitar 28mm (pictures taken outside with sun light)??

Is it just a lens to be used only on close focuses and shadows or insides ?? What about yours taking landscape pictures??

Thank you!

My copy underexposes a bit, but no problem, I just use EV compensation (about +.3 for my copy).

Well, a few samples of my Vivitar 28mm. Quite happy with it now that I now that it overexposes a bit and I need to compensate it.

Hi guys!

I hope I'm welcome to the club too. I got a Vivitar 28mm f2/8 but not a close focus. Mine is a Cosina produced one (starts with a 98...). How close can you guys focus withthe CF version? Mine gets to about 0.23, which I think is plenty.

The colors are brilliant, but mine tends to overexpose quite a bit... (have to adjust exposure by -1.0 to -1.5). It's constant enough so I don't mind so much. I really like this lens. I also have a Pentax M, but I think this one is sharper and has better color.

Mind you guys, I'm quite a novice at this... do you guys think that this prime can be my landscape lens for a long time?

cooldude, which 28 is that exactly? Can you read and post exactly what it says on the front, or better yet, post shots of the lens itself? I think (by my count) there are three Viv 28 2.8 close-focus lenses, by Komine, Kiron, and then Cosina? I think?

Anyway, a shot of the lens posted here would be neat when/if you get the time.

Thanks!
