Questiong to Sigma 100-300mm f/4.5-6.7 DL Lens

Hi all, I would like to get a mega zoom lenses. But I am still a very beginner when it comes to the technical side but is this a good lense to choose.

The reason I selected this lense is because my friend in Melbourne is selling one. How much should that lense market for?

I;m asking here so I dont ripped off from my mate.

Any info or +/-

Would be greats
thanks all in advance

Don't know about AUS$, but I had this lens and paid ~$70USD on Clearance from Ritz Camera (big chain store here in the states)
Pros - Lightweight, inexpensive, good reach, ok image quality
Cons - Slow at the long end

I returned it to the store since I picked up a Pentax F 100-300mm which was f/5.6 at 300mm (~1/2 stop faster).

If the price is right, it's a decent way to get some reach for little money. BUT, I'd also look into a NEW Sigma or Tamron 70-300mm (which would be f/5.6 at the long end) for not much more money.

Like I said, it's cheap. If you could stretch the budget to ~$150, there are better options. If you are stuck under $100, it's ok. Considering folks pay upwards of $1000 or more for telephoto lenses (a 300mm f/2.8 would run you around $3k), you get what you pay for.

If you only had $70 and wanted something that goes out to 300mm, this would work for you. Just don't expect National Geographic quality. It's an ok beginners lens.

Another quick question For Pentax k100d. I'm not quite sure about this but for the F/4 is that the lense type that i can use for my k100d?

If not What does F/4 really mean?

Time to read up on some photography basics. "Understanding Exposure" is a good read (by Bryan Peterson), or maybe google for some articles that explain shutter speed/f-stop/ISO.

Good luck!

Once you have used good quality lenses, it is near impossible to go back.

Well first start by learning about PHOTOGRAPHY, then it will be much easier to figure out what f/2.8 on a lens means and what a 300mm lens can do that a 50mm lens can't do.

You gotta learn to walk before you can run.

As for which model "suits" your K100D, ANY lens that says it fits Pentax (aka K-mount) will fit your camera.

Oh, I believe I told you exactly where to start in my post above.

Do you have the 18-55mm lens that usually comes with the camera? Stick with that for awhile until you learn enough about this stuff to know WHEN and WHAT you need to upgrade.

Its small, lightweight, IQ is OK, but slow as heck. $50 USD is the max I'd pay for onw nowadays. The DA 50-200 runs rings around it IMO.

I had this lens for a short while and I'll say this much--you're better off continuing to save until you can afford the Tamron 70-300 or the FAJ 75-300.
27718 Pentax SMCP-FA-J 75-300mm f/4.5-5.8 AL, Telephoto Auto Focus Zoom Lens - Black

The Sigma 100-300 is OK, but it's flaws start to show when you want to crop a good deal. This image is one that I took with the Sigma and cropped:

If you don't absolutely need 300mm, then a used DA50-200 would be a good choice, as well. You can generally find them in the marketplace for under $150.

Heather

I agree with heather- I had the quantary branded version of this lens, and havn't really used it much. I would stretch your budget and get at least a tamron/sigma 70-300. The 100-300 doesn't let as much light in, so you get slower shutter speeds which can result in blur in your pictures. It is also a very slow focusing lens (when using AF).
