I have the K Series version of this lens and it has the same optics as the Takumar, but with the full SMC coatings on all lens surfaces.
Yes this lens needs a good heavy tripod to support it as well as secondary support for the camera, to stop vibrations. The 1000/8 is physically the longest lens in millimeters that Pentax made in any format, so it’s also a pain to carry around, especially in the heavy aluminum trunk.
However you can get good results from this lens, as long as the atmospheric conditions don’t hamper your shot, or your subject is too close. This lens has a poor minimum focusing distance of 30 meters.
Just remember the 1000/8 costs less than 10% of the A*1200/8, so you get what you pay for.
