M42 SMC Takumar 1000mm f/8 ??

Since someone is selling this beast for 500 EUR in Finland, I found myself wondering whether this lens would be any good for anything. Seems like its HUGE and probably is going to be a pain to keep steady.

I can't imagine it holds up by todays standards. No ED glass. Better buy a Q and a 300mm lens; it will probably give better results....

Very heavy, quite large. More of a collector's than a user's item. It is usable, but most certainly not convenient nor has modern performance. Do you have an intended use in mind?

I have the K Series version of this lens and it has the same optics as the Takumar, but with the full SMC coatings on all lens surfaces.

Yes this lens needs a good heavy tripod to support it as well as secondary support for the camera, to stop vibrations. The 1000/8 is physically the longest lens in millimeters that Pentax made in any format, so it’s also a pain to carry around, especially in the heavy aluminum trunk.

However you can get good results from this lens, as long as the atmospheric conditions don’t hamper your shot, or your subject is too close. This lens has a poor minimum focusing distance of 30 meters.

Just remember the 1000/8 costs less than 10% of the A*1200/8, so you get what you pay for.

Phil.

I had a chance to buy one of these many years ago.

I passed on it as it was a huge lens and as I didn't have any pack animals about to move it from place to place I passed on the deal. Optically, as Pal suggested, it won't be up to today's standards. That being said I have a number of old K and M series lenses which still perform quite well. If you can get it for a good price it might be worth taking a chance on it. You will need a strong tripod but at least you will be in the super telephoto game.

Update

I see Phil jumped in while I was editing this post. As I recall he owns all the old K series glass which were based on Takumar designs. As he says under certain conditions these old lenses can still perform but they have their limits.

Thanks for all the comments. I just wanted to ask your opinion of this lens because there was not much information going about and it seemed it might be a good bargain for the price. Now I know that it really might be a good buy, if I knew I needed it. Since I don't, I better stay away from this beast. For what I currently shoot, 200 mm is enough. If I ever needed more reach, a teleconverter might be the best.

FWIW, I have the K-mount version: it's a serious lens but 1) f8 is f8 and 2) because of its length, it is prone to vibration. ca is also an issue.
