An 18-250 or the new 55-300 ?

I'm currently awaiting further information on the Pentax 55-300 as a replacement for my current Sigma 70-300 APO. I only occasionally use the "tele" end of the range & need a convenient "carry around" for holidays/trips etc.

How many people have owned an 18-250 & a tele-photo (70-300/50-200 etc) & actually find the 18-250 a suitable alternative.

Sorry to ask a question that has probably been posted before but this is the final "decider" before I buy a lens to meet my telephoto requirements.

thanks

simon

I've owned the DA 50-200, Tamron 18-250, and do own the Tamron 70-300, and IMO the 18-250 is superior to the DA 50-200, and about the equivalent of the Tamron 70-300 LD Di between 70 -> 250. High vignetting at 18mm, and it's slow past 200mm, but other than that, I had no complaints - it's really a sharp, excellent all around lens for the price.

Here are some shots from it --> 18-250

Perhaps you play around with this webpage: Focal length comparison tool, Tamron USA
You'll see that the difference between 250mm and 300mm in reality is small, while the difference between 18mm and 55mm is hugh.

Thanks for the feedback ....

the reason I asked the question is that the price difference between the Pentax 55-300 & the Tamron is minimal here in the uk & if the Tamron is as sharp as the Pentax seems to be (on what little info exists) then I could forego a little at the "tele" end for the benefits of the "all-in-one" solution

Regarding the vignetting does it disappear if stopped-down, also I guess the 18-250 doesn't suffer from the levels of "purple" produced by the 70-300 ?
