I Tried

I tried the Sigma 17-70 and although the images are more than satisfying what I really need is f/2.8 through the range. F/2.8 ends very quickly on the 17-70 at 22mm and indoor shots without flash is something I need. So, this Friday I take the 17-70 back and pick up the 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC Macro.

...next up, the Sigma 50-150 when I have the money

when i was first thinking of buying into pentax, i did a lot of research into fast zooms. the strange thing about the Sigma 18-50 is that Popphoto raaaavved about the Sigma and liked the Tamron a bit less. but on Photozone, they indicated the Tamron was a bit better, i was quite perplexed. user opinions seemed to swing in favour of the Tamron however, but the QC for Pentax seems to be subpar.

maybe you should spend a bit extra and gamble on the DA*?

Actually, I tried the DA* 16-50 while I was looking at the 17-70. The pics I took in shop had PF in the ceiling lights and the display cabinets. The 17-70 had about 1/4 the PF in the ceiling lights and none in the display cabinets.

Right now the Sigma 18-50 Macro is about $500 whereas the DA* 16-50 is about $900. Even without PF is the 16-50 twice the lens? I somehow doubt it. I don't have that type of money anyway
