Sigma 18-125mm F3.8-5.6 DC HSM vs. Ist D -series

Hi all.

This is my first post here. I was looking for a nice "vacation-zoom" lens for my *Ist DS2 (I actually own the Samsung version).
The review on the Sigma 18-125mm F3.8-5.6 DC HSM was quite positive, but I couldn't make up if it would work with my *Ist DS2.
To be short, it doesn't, at least the AF does not work. This lens lacks the AF motor connection and therefore will only work with the K-series.
I was lucky enough to find this out when I came across an example on Ebay, so I ended up not buying it.

Google didn't help me on this, so I hope this information may be useful to someone.
The older Sigma 18-125mm lens, the F3.5-5.6 DC (non-HSM) should work though.

Cheers, Raymond

Won't work with the K100D either. The K100D Super and the K10D were the first to support HSM, what Pentax calls SDM.

The 17-70 f2.8/4.5 (the first version) is screw drive. The images I've seen from it are wonderful (for a zoom). In looking at samples from the 18-125, I have been less impressed than those from the 17-70.

Thanks, but that lens has insufficient range for me. I am thinking about getting the Tamron 18-200mm, and using it for holidays only. I will probably not have much time to take pictures anyway.
This saves me some money as I will for sure be getting the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 to replace the kit lens.

More general speaking, Pentax has some lenses which support both SDM and screwdrive AF.
Is this also true for some of the Sigma HSM lenses, or does in case of Sigma mean: HSM = no screwdrive AF?

Thanks, Raymond

Hi Raymond,
HSM = no screwdrive AF
that's correct, all my HSM Sigma's do not have screwdrive AF
I have Pentax DA18-250 (it was made by Tamron so it is also available as Tamron 18-250) , it is an excellent lens , they pop up on second hand markets from time to time,
this lens is better than Tamron 18-200 or older Sigma ( non HSM) 18-200 and 18-125.
kind regards
jack
