aspherical?

OK, I probably spelled that wrong but what is an aspherical lens and what is the difference in that and just a standard digital zoom lens of the same speed and focal length?

Bottom line is that a lens can be constructed with fewer lens elements if one or two of the elements are aspherical. This may reduce cost and weight while maintaining or even improving the optical quality.

As an example the smc Pentax-FA 28mm/2.8 lens has five elements whereas the older smc Pentax-A 28mm/2.8 lens has 7 elements, and the FA version is generally considered the better of the two.
