If this fictional Pentax 70-200 is a DA* then it will be AW.

there's a big chance the Pentax 70-200 (if ever) will be WR, but expect a high price tag even compared to Sigma/Tamron new versions.

sad news indeed.

Sad but what do you expect. There are fewer and fewer Pentax DSLR owners every day! :-(

My impression is that with Ricoh at the helm, there has only been a moderate push to get the Pentax name out there. I think I am being generous! It is especially frustrating because the K-3 is such a hugely capable camera!

Sent a message to Sigma asking about availability of the 70-200 F 2.8. Here is their reply.

"Good afternoon,

It is true that the Pentax version of the 70-200 has been discontinued. Unfortunately, sales of Pentax versions of lenses were low enough that our parent company didn’t think it was financially feasible to continue producing them. We are continuing to support the Pentax system as most of our new lenses are being made with a Pentax version.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great day!

Best regards,

Michael Sinnott
Sales Operations Supervisor
Sigma Corp of America"

This is concerning. You must also keep in mind the Tamron is only available in their old model and the new high end glass is also not available in the Pentax K mount nor is the Tamron 150-600 Pentax will need to offer a winder range of lenses themselves or become insignificant no matter what bodies they release. Was looking hard at a K-3 but now I'm going to wait and see what develops.

fgaudet - no luck, you have to order it from them but its a fictitious stock, I had another dealer call the Sigma Canadian distributor and they say they're out of stock with no expectations of anymore stock coming! I was hoping to buy one of these.

I was wonderring about it yesterday, I couldn't find it at Adorama or at B&H... Even Henry's (in canada) don't have any.

Whoever wants to get one of the few remaining new ones, thecamerastore.com (again, in canada) was still showing stock yesterday

It is never good to hear a lens was discontinued due to lack of sales. I do, however, find the Tamron 70-200/2.8 to be an excellent lens in that class and highly recommend it.

Yeah, actually here in Canada, the Tamron, even though not discontinued, the Canadian distributor has said there is no timeline on when production for the Pentax mount will happen so we're in limbo there too.

That is my thought, though it may be a year or more before we were to see such a thing in Pentax mount. The current model was over $1000 at low point and I can't imagine that any replacement would be at least $1700 street price.

quite the opposite where I live-- there are more Pentax users here than ever before, new users too in the 30's and below age bracket

It's sad to see this lens discontinued, I love my Sigma EX DG 70-200mm f2.8 HSM Macro II. In term of IQ is comparable (marginally behind) with my DA* 50-135mm. (autofocus is unquestionably better on the Sigma) As far as the weight goes, removing the tripod mount (ala DA*) keeps things manageable. I hope the Sigma updates the 70-200mm f2.8 with their ART coating (I find it more pleasing then their EX line lenses)

Basically there 50-135 & 60-250 in competition with the sigma... There also the cheap old tamron.

Now the official Pentax roadmap show a 70-200. Maybe that even a latest tamron or sigma rebranded. There is no much sales to hope. And if sigma was choosed for the 70-200 rebranding (if there any) they might just want to remove the sigma branded one before the Pentax is out.

Tamron has been the lens partner of choice for Pentax recently so if anything, I suspect the 70-200 will be based on the new Tamron unit.
