If you have a canon or nikon camera now... how would a Pentax branded Sigma lens entice you to come to Pentax?

There is a * lens with a vague line around 70-200. If it is a * lens then it will be AW, and that rules out a Tamron.

The DA Tele Zoom shows a vague line from 150-less than 400. Asahiman says it will be 400mm or longer...

Weren't the Tokina 16-50 and 50-135 non-weather-sealed on Nikon/Canon mounts?

The new Tamron is touted as moisture resistant. Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD Lens

But it isn't dust proof and water-resistant. You're not going to do to the Tamron what Heie did to his lenses...

You might be onto something here, there's a bunch of Pentax re-branded Tamron lenses in the current market. The Tamron is small, light and a very good performer. I don't know if it will come with a DC motor but I'm curious to see how the new tamron 70-200mm f2.8 will perform.

It's a good start at least, less work for Pentax engineers on adding WR to the base design. But it would become SDM.... Just like the 18-270.

Ya, but I'm hoping for WR. Probably won't happen, and it would be a DA* without the mount seal.

I really want WR.

And I want no water splashes in my $2000 lens even more.

A bunch? Which lenses are those? The only lenses in the current line-up that I am aware of that were collaborations are the DA* 16-50/2.8 and DA* 50-135/2.8 (Both in partnership with Tokina) and the DA 10-17 Fisheye (also with Tokina) and DA 18-270 (Tamron). The DA 18-250 was also partnered with Tamron, but it went out or production a few years ago.

The DA 12-24, DA 35 Ltd Macro, & D FA 100 Macro were all collaborations with Tokina.

I've taken my chances with the non WR Tamron 70-200 in some fairly heavy moisture situations, many times, with no ingress of moisture to date. Not saying I recommend that, but there is no need to baby it in a wet environment either.

One should not care typically what the brand/maker of some lens is as long it is good. The reasons to go Pentax today are the in body stabilisation, the superior build quality, affordable WR, a range of small high quality lenses (some with very interresting rendering), ergonomics...

A fast 70-200 with good AF is missing for many action/sport shooters and that could be also an opportunity to brand it as DFA if some FF is in the plans.

My point, and I thought it was obvious, was that the canon and nikon shooters already have sigma lenses. Pentax rebranding a sigma lens won't be a great enticement for very many people.

Not everything as to be special or unique. This 70-200 by essence is not at the heart of Pentax. Like 16-50, 50-135 are not really if as WR. The heart of Pentax are small light lenses. But even if you want thoses small light lenses, you may want a classical 70-200 from time to time. This is exactly what this 70-200 will do, fill a gap. And it can bring value just by filling that gap, even if it from sigma or tamron.

As soon as Pentax name is put on it, many that consider only Pentax lenses will consider buying it... And from the outside, Pentax has a better system. If they brand it DFA, that will be a perfect strategy to make thoses wanting an FF to wait.

My guess is that Sigma is coming out with a new version of the 70-200 for a little more money and selling off old stock prior. I am sure that it will be available in the k mount, but that it will take time for that to happen.

As to Pentax collaborating with Sigma on a 70-200, I very much doubt that. I also doubt that they would rebadge a Tamron lens. More likely use an existing lens formula with new coatings and put sealing and in lens motor (probably SDM, but maybe some ring motors).
