Pentax 12-24 vs Samyang 10mm, Sigma 8-16mm and 10-20: any first hand experience?

I am in a pickle currently on ultrawides. The 12-24 i own fell to the ground and took up a certain slack, which means it works but sometimes I have to push it back otherwise it does not reach infinity focus.

I am now in doubt whether to keep it and buy the Samyang 10mm or the Sigma 8-16mm to go wider, or replace it altogether with the Sigma 8-16 or the 10-20 f3.5.

Any first hand experience? I am first of all interested in resolution as some other defects can be corrected, bad resolution not.

I'd repair that 12-24, it must be worth the repair cost.

I can only comment from personal experience with the 8-16. It's really fun. I rented one for two weeks, and got some really nice images along our river and in the neighborhood. These images are still my wife's favorites, and have been used by our village. I should have bought the lens right then, instead of waiting and now the price is high.

I would get the 12-24 repaired and then also get the 8-16. It is wide and sharp. I like my copy.

I wonder if Eric Hendrickson would repair it?

is the 8-16 that much better than the 10-20?

I've never played with the 10-20. From what I've seen, they're just different. The 8-16 can really isolate a subject if they're close, and give this funky 3-D effect because the background looks so far away. It's not like a fisheye, though it's highly distorted at 8mm, of course.

I'd like to do a controlled comparison of these lenses, but since I don't have any but the 10-17, it would take some borrowing or renting.

I do have the 21mm ltd, and it's a great little wide angle lens, very high quality.

i have the pentax 15 mm limited and love it but was looking at wider and had been wondering about the sigma8 -16 and 10-20 and 10...so the 8-16 doesn't act like a fisheye?

8-16 is NOT a fisheye.

It's a nice lens. Recommended.

It's not a fisheye, but it does distort the view as any UWA lens will. It stretches toward the outer edges, and makes that look farther away. If I remember tonight, I'll link some images.

Forum member kengoh creates some amazing night photography images with his Sigma 10-20. I'm lukewarm about my own copy, as the images it produces seem flat and un-contrasty. But that could simply be a lack of skill on my part.

Another alternative: Get a Samyang 8mm Fisheye and get the 12-24 repaired. It defishes pretty well (or so I read - I haven't wanted to do that with any shots yet), and it's fairly inexpensive.

I've never used the 12-24, just the sigma 10-20, and I pretty much stopped using that once I got the 15mm limited. I've only brought it along with me twice since then, when I knew I'd want to intentionally distort perspective by doing an extreme closeup with it -- once on a fishing trip ("see how HUGE this fish I caught is!") and once to the Studebaker museum because ultra wide lenses + cool cars = win.

If you are a good photographer you can find ways to exploit the strengths of each lens and reduce any optical weaknesses. Software correction is a useful tool, but it is better to get things right in camera.

In my opinion the Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 is an excellent lens, though it requires some skill to get the most out of it. It flares easily, and you can't use standard filters on it. But really those are the only two big downsides. It focuses silently, distortion is very well controlled in the middle of the zoom range, Chromatic aberrations are very well controlled (the same can't be said for the Pentax 12-24mm f/4).

...and if those images from Digitalis don't sell you on the lens....

I found it very easy to use even in very bright conditions. Now you got me wanting this lens again!

And if not, you can get 8 miles of parking lot (and maybe your feet) at the bottom of the photo

Sell the 12-24mm, Im sure someone will happily take it (and have it fixed, if needed) and get the Samyang 10mm. I have the Samyang 14mm, but the 10mm should be pretty good, too. And we need more sample photos of that lens on these forums
