Another I have the 55-300mm thread w/ pics

All shots were done hand held.

55mm, F/4, 1/2000, ISO100

300mm, F/5.8, 1/750, ISO100

cropped

300mm, F/5.8, 1/750, ISO100

the lack of fringing and the sharpness is a very good sign
any first impressions?

This is a great telephoto lens. I had a short experience with the Tamron 70-300mm and this lens is sharper, faster, and has way less purple fringing. The 55-300mm is a great intermediate step between the 70-300mm's and the DA* telephotos. If the DA* is not in your budget, but you want something that shoots better than the 70-300mm options then this would be then lens for you. The 70-300mm's are great lenses for the price, but after experiencing both I would totally choose the Pentax. People seem to be picking up this lens pretty quickly too. I got the last one at the store.

I can see some pretty noticeable vignetting in the aeroplane shot. Who cares? I love vignetting.
