A few quick shots from Sunday's match. I'm transitioning over from using the Canon 100-400mm to the Tamron. The latter fills the frame much better, but the former has better tracking AF. On more static shots the difference in AF quality is notably closer. But I've never used a third-party lens that can match or exceed the OEM for things like predictive AF. Still, I'm very pleased with the Tamron, especially for the money and the reasonable weight. The forthcoming Sigma 150-600mm is significantly heavier which one can feel over hours. But if its optical quality exceeds the Tamron then I'll check it out as well. Same goes if Canon actually releases a new version of the 100-400mm next week.
There is some consensus out there that the Tamron lens is optimized for a FF camera; for me, the quality dropoff with my 7D is apparent, but not abhorrent. The reach is still super.
Though I've only used the Bigma on a Pentax K20D, from what I've seen and read, the Sigma 150-500mm lens is a couple of notches below this Tamron, especially in tracking AF.
For this match I had contrasty morning light which helped keep the shutter speed up. For these longer focal lengths, with IS disabled, I've been happy with 1/3000-1/6000. With good light I'm comfy with ISO 800.
