cropping obsession inevitably leads to megapixel obsession i dont like both.
And prefer stopping down or batch refine pix with a good highpass-filter algorithm directly after shooting, but only if i really would feel the need for it.
DoF and framing immensively suffer from cropping an image in my opinion... I compose "onCam" and im really no pixel peeper
But everyone has his very own ways...

i have both lenss
so generaly i dont use tamron 150-600
how did you mount a tamron 150-600 to your pentax body, since it doesn't come in k-mount?

on a ff camera, at 500mm, the tamron 150-600 looks like it stomps all over every one of the xxx-500 sigmas, at least in this test: Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens Image Quality

tamron 150-600 vs. canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM, @400mm, $779(after rebate) vs. $2199(b&h): Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens Image Quality

i'd call that better than comparable, but obviously we'd all pick the canon zoom if we could afford it.

these 150-600mm superzooms, both sigma and tamron, are solid bargains; you can see that from the sigma zoom blowout..

things are not perfect, dpr says that the tamron is a bit weaker on crop, and my copy of the tamron has distortion at 600mm, and some weird vignetting(hood?) in the top left corner... it's also slightly decentered at the wide end, where i'll never use it... this is 600mm, f/8, iso500, off of a monopod, on the a7r/laea4 adapter: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dbfo0s85rniu4yc/DSC04922.JPG

I tried taking pictures during the last red moon and that's the first time I've considered a 300mm (450mm full frame equivalent) as short. Give me either Sigma or Tamron 150-600 WR and I'm in for the deal.

For the price the Tamron is going now I'd have to say it's the best bang for the buck...people here talk about it not being sharp at 600mm...I've tested it against the Sigma 150-600 Sports and to me, the differences were not big enough to cover the cost difference.
Below are some examples:

600mm f6.3 (wide open) 100% crop:

The same scene with f8 at 600mm (slightly different position though), full size on Flickr:

I've owned a Sigma 150-500 back when I was on Pentax still, and this lens trumps it hands down...went from that Sigma to the Pentax DA*300 with the AFA 1.7x TC...it was an upgrade compared to the Sigma...a considerable one. After switching to Nikon I bought the AF-S Nikon 300 with the 1.4 TC, but sold the 300 in order to buy the Tamron...IQ might be a hair worse, but it goes to 600mm, is a zoom and handholdable...with VR. Didn't regret the decision since.

Sure, that test makes it look better.

Nice. You managed to find a guy who tested it for about 5 minutes and couldn't even be bothered to do a full review.

you can select the 50-500 from the dropdown menu in the comparison link, it looks like he's tested all of 'em(?)

you didn't look at the comparison shots.

none of the xxx-500mm sigma zooms are as good as the new 150-600 zooms.

wrong.

And because you are so self convinced, you'll have to find out by yourself what else would work and where to buy. :P

Maybe now that a new/upgraded Tamron ultra tele zoom will be announced - and they expect it would be again a 150-600 zoom that will match the Sigma Sport edition - there are again some chances to see a K-mount version. I hope they will make it. The Pentax version of such a lens woud also fit the new Ricoh-Pentax philosophy and cooperation with Tamron... I'm curious to see what they will anounce in Photokina.

I dunno. I have no burning desire to get the latest Sigma/Tamron, even if I could.

I'm still very happy with my Sigma 150-500 and it is sharp at 500. Course I've never tried it vs a Tamron 150-600 but then I just use K mount and the big Tamron doesn't come in K mount. I've got two modern telephotos ...one of the first 55-300's and the aforementioned Sigma. I'm pleased with both, throughout their zoom ranges. They seem to work very well, invariably they are being handheld by yours truly.

But then I use higher ISO, always shoot (or try to) over 1\1000th and am mindful of my F stop, the outdoor lighting and how I hold the camera/telephoto. These are the things I learned long ago during the film era. Funny how all these 'vintage' ideas still work so well, even with modern long lens equipment.

If Tamron release any 150-600 in K-mount, Sigma will be sure to follow. Or vice versa.

One of them just needs to break the ice.

I don't get it, all this complaining about missing out on these new fad 150-600mm lenses from Tamron and Sigma. There are plenty of reviews on the forum on the Bigmas and Pentax lenses. The Bigmas are good lenses, but the primes from Pentax and Sigma with or without TC's are at the professional level.

When I looked into buying a long lens I considered all of these lenses and reviews, but all roads lead you to a prime. I've been a little skeptical of these new 150-600mm, and @ 600mm it seems to be the same as usual ...... only good, but not pro level. Whats the point ! You're buying the lens for 600mm and not 150mm, and 600mm had better be real good, but its only okay. Me, I want to be stunned by the quality, and I even considered the Sigma 300mm 2.8, but couldn't part with that sort of money yet (you could buy a good used Toyota for that price ! ).

But you choose Pentax for the APSC lens range and the limited lens options. I've looked into the other brands like most of us do, and in APSC Canon and Nikon has hardly any APSC lenses, and zero limited like pancakes, except the Canon EF 40mm 2.8 Pentax knock off. The only other APSC lens range comparable with Pentax is Fujifilm. If you use Canon and Nikon you need to go Tokina, Sigma or Tamron to get anything close to a decent APSC lens range like Pentax and Fujifilm. So thats the trade off, and its a pretty good trade off and there are of course the Sigma Bigma's to satisfy those after a long consumer lens.

Sheesh, would a person seriously change brands for a 150-600mm consumer lens !

It would be nice if Tamron and Sigma make these new 150-600mm consumer lenses for Pentax, and even if they do I won't buy one.

If I were really desperate for 600mm, I'd get a Panasonic 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 with a 2 times crop factor makes it 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6. 600mm would be 5.6 and not 6.3. Plus its way cheaper. Plus it weighs a fraction of a bigma. Plus from what I've read, the Panasonic and Olympus lens mounts interchange with each other. Plus Panasonics lens stabilization works in unison with its IBIS with 5 stops of stabilization.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a fairly dedicated Pentax user and will continue to be for some uses. But what I can tell everyone here is that I have some experience of both as I went out and bought a Nikon D5300 and a Sigma 150-600 (contemporary) to specifically compare with my K3, DA*300 +1.4TC, for bird photography. I have concluded that for 300mm the DA* is slightly sharper and I love this lens. But it focuses slower. But at 420mm with the TC it is a different story. The Sigma is on a par and focuses a lot quicker. Then at 600mm the Sigma is at least as sharp if not sharper than the DA*+1.4TC and much faster focusing. Clearly the Pentax combination is more compact to handle but the Sigma 'C' is on a par weight wise and handles well hand held with the OS at least matching the in body K3 SR. The Sigma 150-600mm is way ahead of the old Sigma 150-500 in terms of sharpness and speed and accuracy of focusing. (Unless some of this is due to the Nikon body). I imagine the performance of the Tamron 150-600mm is similar.

OSV - I agree. I've had the 150-500 on K3 and 150-600 on D5300. The 150-600 wins hand down at max zoom.
