Vivitar Series 1 105mm F2/5 on Ebay

Not mine and wont ship outside of the USA from the looks of it so I will leave it to the home crowd. He obviously seems to know its value but it could maybe picked up for a reasonable price.
Someone else on here could even buy it having sold theirs for much more

Vivitar series 1 105mm 1;1 macro pentax mount excellent - eBay (item 130221614643 end time May-17-08 13:23:10 PDT)

I'm sorry but am I the only one that is seeing that the prices for this lens is getting ridiculous? Am I a little jealous I never was able to get one? Yes! But now that it's starting in the 300$ and going on up it's getting to the point that I don't think i'll ever want one unless it was purely for collectors purposes. Is it even the best macro lens?

I got lucky and found one on ebay NOS in 2004. I actually called the guy in CA who was selling them - 2 dozen he said he had in his store. I think they were around $239 BIN - a few were lower. I didn't even really know it was all that special.

When I sold almost all my stuff in 2005 (I had a serious case of Buy Anything Addiction) nobody bid on it, so it was in a box when I bought the K10D last winter.

Ask anybody who has a Voigtlander or a 90mm 2.5 Series 1 and extender if this is the BEST macro.

At this price I can almost exchange it for a 43. Hmmm

As with anything it's all a matter of supply and demand I suppose.
Now we see people paying $500 for one the price will naturally increase.

I have bought a Vivitar 55mm macro f2/8, Viv 90mm macro 2/8 Viv 100mm macro 2/8, Pentax M 50mm f4 macro and Tamron PKA 90mm macro from ebay in the last week or so for just $50 more than his starting price.

Only trouble now is I would quite like a 105mm 2.5 to go with them

The thing that I wonder is if it's really worth that much why are the other mount versions not even going for close to that amount? Do they really have much better lens alternatives that we do?

I think this is the reason - these lenses are +/- 20 years old.

Canon EF/FD breech/FD bayonet Mount replaced by EOS - Mount is dead
Minolta/Sony MC/MD mount replaced by Maxxum - Mount is dead
Nikon AI Mount has been stable. Lenses can be mounted but bodies may not work with MF lenses due to lack of electronics.
Olympus OM this mount never changed, but it was sort of replaced by E1 Mount - Mount is comatose (adapter is hard to find and expensive).
Pentax M42 and K-Mount 24,000,000 legacy lenses can be made to work satisfactorily with every digital camera body, whether or not the lens has auto aperture electrical contacts. The 105/2.5 Series 1 Macro has the electrical contacts, which makes it even more desirable to Pentax owners.

I think I got most of this right. The point is, Pentax has yet to make their legacy lenses completely obsolete - so some of the best Pentax and third-party lenses from the past are in great demand and short supply.

All it would take to ruin the re-selling price on lenses like this, is for Pentax to come out with an extremely good 100mm f/2.8 FF macro selling for $300 new. If it had fantastic bokeh and an aperture ring, it might even bring down the price of the legendary Voigtlander 125/2.5 that is now selling for $1000 to $1500!

The Market resists "it's not worth it"

The market is the market.

It's hard to find a lens as good as the Viv S1 105 for under $500, if you think about it. The DA 100 macro, Sigma, etc all are good, but they are not quite as sharp, the bokeh isn't generally considered as good, but most of all... Unlike the Viv, there are lots of them out there. That last point is the biggest determinant of market price.

The VL 125 is the Viv 105's closest comparison, and you can see where that price went.

If you want the best macro lens, you can spend $1000+ for a VL, or $300 - 500 for a Viv S1 . It doesn't strike me as an outrageous price - $500 for a semi-rare and getting rarer specimen of the best or 2nd best glass in it's class. (and you can usually get them for ~$300-350 anyway.)
