Damn! I was just about to post that very response!!! How did you know?? (You should hear my daughter talk). There was once a rumor that Sony developed a special soft lens for the HDC1000W . . . .

FWIW, as of Friday Diane Sawyer has been officially boriscleto'ed™. OffAir the set was apparently mobbed, and hip-deep in tears.

...your teardown, CLA, re-build and focus adjustment results in exactly the same (un)sharpness.

I know my lens is not sharp when my wife says she likes her close portraits photos taken from that lens. :-)

You know your lens isn't sharp when you keep trying to find the peak focus of a manual lens with LV and 10x magnification but just can't figure out where the point of best focus is.
Unfortunately this happened!
