Tamron Sp 300 f2.8 vs DA* 300 f/4 ?

My question is how do these two lenses compare in IQ ? Maybe pros and cons?
The Tamron is a faster lens which would be a pro but it is manual focus, maybe a con?
Does the IQ break down faster on the Tamron with a TC?
What would be a good going price for the Tamron in pristine condition?
How do they balance?

Hey Oren, I have the tamron 360b and the da*300 and would say they are both very sharp lenses. The tamron is a little soft at 2.8 nice at 5.6 I might have to try both at f4 to see who wins. I've only had the pentax for a short while but it seems to work well with the pentax 1.7x afa that makes it f6.7 with the tamron it makes it about f4.6 or thereabouts. I have got a lot of shots on my hosting site with the tamron and if the exif says 450mm they are with the 140f tamron tc and if 500mm with the 1.7x which I got in feb. The tamron can get some pretty bad pf if you aren't careful like shooting a birdnest with a bright white sky in the back ground (very challenging conditions of course) with the 1.7x I like to use it at f11 or f13 (probably f5.6 or f8 on the lens) to eliminate this which is worse with the 1.7x and for dof. The tamron is 5lb. and hand holdable but a monopod really helps while the pentax seems really nice to handle. I think I got a good deal on the tamron last year $500 usd, I've been thinking of selling it now that I have the da* because I'd really really like a 31mm but I don't really want to see it go because the tamron is definitely better at f2.8 I see no pf with the pentax yet

I can't say much about the DA* 300 but I have the Tamron and just love it. I use it regularily with the 1.7x TC at f2.8 or f4. I was a little worried because it was listed in very used shape - including some small nicks on the front element. Despite that, I've not seen any strange spots on any of my images and I've pixel peeped lots. You might have a hard time finding one in perfect shape (on ebay) you might end up paying $800 or a grand for it! Mine is well used, I bet takes pictures as clear as the 'mint' ones and cost me $450. :-) As always, though, your mileage may vary...
